Labour Party Roars: Silencing Shettima Is A Threat To Democracy!
ABUJA – The Labour Party (LP) has strongly criticised the apparent pressure placed on Vice President Senator Kashim Shettima to swiftly retract his remarks opposing the removal of a sitting governor by the President, calling it a dangerous signal for Nigeria’s democratic values.....KINDLY READ THE FULL STORY HERE▶
According to NIVONEWS, Shettima had recalled the 2013 resistance led by former Speaker Aminu Tambuwal and ex-Attorney General Mohammed Bello Adoke (SAN), who blocked President Goodluck Jonathan’s attempt to oust elected governors in the North-East under the guise of insecurity. Labour Party sees Shettima’s reflection on that episode as a rare moment of candour and constitutional clarity.
However, in a statement issued on Saturday by Ken Asogwa, Special Adviser on Media to the party’s acting National Chairman, LP questioned the Vice President’s abrupt withdrawal. The party alleged he may have been coerced, suggesting that even Nigeria’s second-highest officeholder was not immune to intimidation under the current administration.
“If someone like Shettima — shielded by immunity and high office — cannot freely speak without being forced into retraction, then it reflects a deep crisis in our nation’s human rights climate,” the statement read.
According to NIVONEWS, the Labour Party also warned that the disturbing speed and intensity with which the Vice President backpedalled on his comments may signal a deeper crisis within the Tinubu-led government. “Who is intimidating the Vice President of the Federal Republic of Nigeria?” the party queried.
The Vice President had made his comments during the launch of a book, OPL 245: The Inside Story of the $1.3 Billion Oil Block, written by Adoke, where he revisited the legal position of 2013 — that the President lacks constitutional powers to remove governors, even under emergency rule.
Labour Party further stated, “It is disingenuous for handlers of the Vice President to suddenly claim ignorance of Section 305 of the 1999 Constitution, which has remained unchanged since 2013 and confers no power on the President to sack a governor during an emergency.”
The party commended Shettima for “momentarily speaking truth to power,” insisting that his reference to Governor Siminalayi Fubara’s controversial removal attempt in March 2025 was both timely and constitutionally valid.
According to NIVONEWS, LP also condemned what it called the “undignified efforts” by unseen hands to diminish the stature of the Vice President and his office. “We urge those behind these maneuvers to stop. It’s not just an insult to Shettima as a person, but to the entire constitutional order he represents.”
