Campus Chaos: UNIUYO Medical Lecturers Stage Strike Over Alleged Plot to Hijack VC Seat!

Medical lecturers at the University of Uyo, operating under the Medical and Dental Consultants Association of Nigeria (MDCAN), UUTH chapter, have embarked on an indefinite strike over the exclusion of clinical professors from the Vice-Chancellor selection process.....KINDLY READ THE FULL STORY HERE▶

In a statement issued Sunday in Uyo, the union said the industrial action took effect from midnight, Thursday, June 26, following resolutions from an Extraordinary General Meeting held between June 20 and 25.

The strike, described as total, covers all academic duties performed by clinical lecturers, including lectures, seminars, rounds, supervision, and examinations.

The lecturers accused the university of sidelining medical academics by refusing to accept the Postgraduate Medical Fellowship as an equivalent of a PhD in its call for VC applications. They also took issue with the reportedly dismissive response of the Pro-Chancellor, Dr. Muiz Banire (SAN), to their complaints.

In a letter titled “Notice of Withdrawal of Service”, signed by MDCAN Chairman Dr. Ibiok Usendiah and Secretary Dr. Solomon Bassey, the group demanded an official rejoinder and apology, as well as formal recognition of the fellowship as an acceptable qualification in council records, before considering a return to work.

2. Feature Style Rephrase (Narrative & Human Interest Focus):

A quiet storm has broken out at the University of Uyo. Behind closed hospital doors and silent lecture halls, clinical lecturers—consultants and specialists who balance patient care with academic work—have withdrawn their services in protest.

Under the banner of MDCAN, University of Uyo Teaching Hospital chapter, the doctors-turned-academics began an indefinite strike at midnight on Thursday, June 26, triggered by what they describe as the unjust exclusion of medical scholars from the race for the Vice-Chancellor position.

“It’s not just about a title,” said one member. “It’s about fairness and recognition of our qualifications.” The crux of their grievance is the university’s refusal to accept the Postgraduate Medical Fellowship as an equivalent to a PhD—effectively barring them from even applying.

Adding fuel to the fire was a controversial response from the university’s Pro-Chancellor, Dr. Muiz Banire, who allegedly brushed off their concerns with the remark: “If anyone finds it ambiguous, let him go back to school.”

Outraged by what they described as an insult to their professionalism, the association issued a “Notice of Withdrawal of Service,” demanding an official apology and public acknowledgment that their medical fellowship is valid for professorial roles.

Until then, the strike continues—and with it, a growing rift over academic recognition and institutional respect.

Crisis at UNIUYO: Medical Lecturers Strike Over VC Exclusion, Demand Apology for ‘Insult’

The University of Uyo is at a boiling point as medical lecturers have gone on indefinite strike, protesting what they call an institutional slight and professional sabotage.

The MDCAN UUTH chapter accuses the university of academic elitism, deliberately sidelining professors of clinical medicine from contesting the Vice-Chancellorship by discrediting their Postgraduate Medical Fellowship—a standard qualification in the field.

To make matters worse, the university’s Pro-Chancellor, Dr. Muiz Banire (SAN), reportedly dismissed their concerns with what they described as an “insulting” statement suggesting they return to school.

In their strongly worded letter titled “Notice of Withdrawal of Service”, the doctors demand a full public apology and a published commitment recognizing their fellowship as equivalent to a PhD.

Until then, all academic activity by clinical lecturers—including teaching, exams, and research supervision—remains suspended, with far-reaching implications for students and the institution’s integrity.

APC Fires Back at Adeleke Over ₦300bn LG Funds Allegation, Blames Governor for Salary Crisis....KINDLY READ THE FULL STORY HERE▶

The Osun State Chapter of the All Progressives Congress (APC) has responded to claims by Governor Ademola Adeleke that local government officials under the party diverted about ₦300 billion meant for workers’ salaries.

Adeleke had made the allegation during a stakeholders’ meeting, accusing APC-controlled council officials of hijacking funds and forcing the state government to shoulder salary payments for local government workers, teachers, health staff, and pensioners for over a year.

He insisted he would not abandon workers, blaming the situation for delays in executing some state projects.

But in a statement, APC’s Director of Media and Information, Kola Olabisi, dismissed the claims, accusing the governor of misleading the public and shifting blame.

The party alleged that Adeleke was responsible for the salary issues, claiming he refused to release electronic payment vouchers and other financial documents needed for processing payments.

APC also said pension-related records, leave bonuses, cooperative deductions, and other financial data had not been made available despite repeated appeals, insisting that funds were properly accounted for and available for use if approved.

The party urged pensioners and workers to seek clarification, insisting the situation could be resolved if the governor allowed due process to take place.
