There May Be Consequences If You Defect Without Resigning – NNPP Warns Gov Yusuf.
The Kano State chapter of the New Nigeria Peoples Party (NNPP) has insisted that Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf must follow due process before exiting the party.....KINDLY READ THE FULL STORY HERE▶
Addressing journalists in Kano on Tuesday, the NNPP State Chairman, Senator Elmasud Doguwa, said the governor is at liberty to leave the party once he submits a formal resignation in accordance with party rules.
Doguwa stressed that the NNPP has no intention of forcing the governor to remain on its platform if he no longer wishes to do so. However, he noted that Yusuf must officially notify the legally recognised NNPP in writing before joining another political party.
The clarification comes amid rising speculation that the governor, who won the 2023 election on the NNPP platform, may be considering a move to the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC).
“Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf is still a bona fide member of the NNPP, the party with a basket of fruits as its logo,” Doguwa said. “We respect him as our governor and as a party member. If he decides to leave, that is his constitutional right, but we insist that he must first formally resign from the party. We have not received any such resignation.”
He explained that while party membership is a personal decision, it must be exercised in line with established rules and procedures.
Doguwa further cautioned that failing to follow the formal resignation process could carry legal implications, especially in light of ongoing court cases over the party’s leadership.
“Considering the judgments already delivered by three courts, if Governor Yusuf defects without resigning through the bona fide NNPP, it may attract consequences should the Supreme Court’s final ruling eventually be in our favour,” he warned.
He reaffirmed that the current NNPP leadership in Kano remains the legitimate authority based on existing court decisions and called on the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) to uphold and enforce those judgments.
“We urge INEC to respect and implement all the court rulings delivered last year on this issue,” Doguwa added.
