Showdown Looms in Lagos! APC Accused of Imposing Candidates Ahead of Council Polls
The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has unveiled a comprehensive schedule outlining key upcoming electoral activities, including nationwide bye-elections, the resumption of Continuous Voter Registration (CVR), and preparations for the Anambra State governorship election.....KINDLY READ THE FULL STORY HERE▶
The announcement came on the second day of INEC’s ongoing consultative meetings with major stakeholders, including leaders of registered political parties across the country.
In his opening remarks on Thursday, INEC Chairman, Professor Mahmood Yakubu, revealed that bye-elections in 16 constituencies across 12 states have been scheduled for Saturday, August 16, 2025.
According to Yakubu, the elections will involve 3,553,659 registered voters across 32 Local Government Areas, 356 Wards, and 6,987 Polling Units, with 30,451 officials expected to be deployed for the exercise.
However, Yakubu clarified that bye-elections will not be conducted in Khana II State Constituency (Rivers State) due to an ongoing state of emergency, or in Talata Mafara South (Zamfara State) owing to a pending legal dispute over the seat’s declared vacancy.
The INEC boss also outlined a tight electoral timeline:
-
Party primaries are to be held from July 17 to 21, 2025
-
Submission of nomination forms via the INEC portal opens 9:00 a.m. on July 22 and closes 6:00 p.m. on July 26
-
Public campaigns will run from August 2 to August 14, 2025
On voter registration, Professor Yakubu confirmed that CVR will resume at both state and national levels.
For Anambra State, ahead of its governorship election, CVR will take place in all 326 wards from July 8 to 17, 2025, operating daily (including weekends) between 9:00 a.m. and 3:00 p.m.
During the exercise, eligible citizens can register for the first time, request transfers, or replace lost or damaged PVCs. Previously issued PVCs will also be available for collection at registration centres.
Nationally, online pre-registration resumes on August 18, 2025, while in-person registration will begin on August 25 at INEC’s state offices, the FCT office, and all 774 LGAs across the country.
