AISEN Urges Nigerian Teens to Champion Climate, Equality, and Global Goals
In a significant leap for youth-led climate advocacy, more than 500 students from various schools across Lagos converged for the inaugural Association of International Schools in Nigeria (AISEN) Student-Led SDG Conference, themed “Lend Your Voice.”....KINDLY READ THE FULL STORY HERE▶
Coinciding with World Environment Day, the landmark event offered a dynamic platform for young leaders to engage in dialogue, advocacy, and collaborative solutions centered on the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).
According to a statement issued on Tuesday, the conference—organised by AISEN—welcomed delegates from both international and public schools to deliberate on urgent environmental challenges and innovative pathways to sustainability.
AISEN Vice Chairman, Mrs. Kofo Karunwi, recounted how the student-led initiative was born.
“Last year, during AISEN’s 20th anniversary, we focused on the SDGs and the future. After the celebration, we decided to go further by encouraging schools to implement SDG-themed projects,” she said.
Karunwi revealed that 10 schools initially volunteered to lead the charge, but only six saw the project through to completion. “Crucially, this initiative wasn’t teacher-driven. The students themselves planned, designed, and executed the entire programme—teachers only provided guidance.”
The conference set the foundation for deeper youth engagement in climate action, with future editions expected to feature creative sustainability expressions such as recycled art, upcycling, and increased grassroots collaboration.
Participants delivered presentations on environmental protection, waste management, climate resilience, and the creation of sustainable communities, reflecting a growing sense of urgency and responsibility among Nigerian youth for the future of the planet.
In her address, Dr. Oreoluwa Finnih, Special Adviser to the Lagos State Governor on Sustainable Development Goals, applauded the event as a strong example of youth-led advocacy.
“Our work at the Office of SDGs is anchored on three core pillars—advocacy and partnerships, data collection, and project implementation. What we witnessed today is advocacy in motion,” she said.
Dr. Finnih also praised the inclusion of public school students in the conference, describing it as a testament to inclusive sustainability.
“The localisation of the SDGs is critical to their success. I’m impressed that this summit didn’t restrict participation to international schools—students from public schools were actively involved and engaged,” she noted.

Friday, August 7, 2026: After a morning departure from his residence, a requiem mass will take place at St. Joseph Catholic Church, Oba-Ile. He will be laid to rest in a private ceremony at 12:45 p.m. at Labaluyegbe Villa, followed by a reception at Aderonmu Grammar School Field.
The Bangbola Oyewo family of the Ese-Ola Royal House remembered him as a beloved family man, traditional leader, and an inspiration to generations of theatre practitioners.
