Wike Undermining Democracy in Abuja” – Ireti Kingibe Raises Alarm Over Election Comments
The Senator representing the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Ireti Kingibe, has strongly condemned a recent statement by the FCT Minister, Nyesom Wike, suggesting that the outcome of the 2026 Area Council elections in Abuja is already known. Kingibe described the remark as reckless, coercive, and a direct affront to democratic principles.....KINDLY READ THE FULL STORY HERE▶
In a statement released to the press on Wednesday and shared via her social media platforms, Senator Kingibe disclosed that she has formally communicated her concerns to several national and international stakeholders. These include the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), the Inspector General of Police, the National Security Adviser, the leadership of the National Assembly, as well as international bodies such as the European Union (EU), African Union (AU), ECOWAS, and members of the diplomatic community.
She warned that Wike’s remarks strike at the core of electoral integrity and could have grave implications for the political environment in the FCT.
The senator attached a video of Wike speaking at a public event in Abuja, where he is heard saying:
“I don’t know those who want to run elections in the area council, I don’t know what they will preach to the people. But those who are with us, they have the opportunity to tell people what we have done. So let people not waste their money. The result is known.”
Reacting to the comments, Kingibe stated:
“As the duly elected representative of the FCT, I feel an obligation to respond firmly to this deeply troubling and undemocratic rhetoric attributed to the Honourable Minister. Advising opposition parties not to ‘waste their time and money’ and declaring that ‘the result is known’ ahead of an election is not only provocative—it is dangerous.
“Such remarks threaten the very foundation of our democracy, disenfranchise voters, and dishonour the sacrifices made by generations of Nigerians who fought for credible and transparent elections.”
She vowed to resist any attempt to rig or manipulate the 2026 polls and promised to use every constitutional means at her disposal to uphold electoral justice.
“I am committed to ensuring that the FCT serves as a beacon of participatory democracy—not a playground for political imposition.
“Let it be clear: the 2026 Area Council elections will not be decided by decree, propaganda, or threats. There will be no coronation. These elections will serve as a referendum on the quality of leadership in the FCT, and the people—not politicians—will have the final say.
