NEC Chaos Rocks PDP! Makinde Faction Fumes as INEC Verdict Splits Party

Published

on

The internal crisis within the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) escalated on Wednesday as two powerful blocs—led by Oyo State Governor Seyi Makinde and former Rivers State Governor Nyesom Wike—battled over the scheduled June 30 National Executive Committee (NEC) meeting and the controversial reinstatement of Senator Samuel Anyanwu as National Secretary.....KINDLY READ THE FULL STORY HERE▶

Makinde’s camp, which includes Governors Peter Mbah (Enugu), Douye Diri (Bayelsa), Ademola Adeleke (Osun), Dauda Lawal (Zamfara), 11 NWC members, and other party stakeholders, insists that the NEC meeting must proceed as planned and opposes Anyanwu’s return.

Conversely, Wike-aligned figures such as Governors Caleb Mutfwang (Plateau), Kefas Agbu (Taraba), Adamu Fintiri (Adamawa), Bala Mohammed (Bauchi), Acting National Chairman Umar Damagum, Organising Secretary Umar Bature, and Legal Adviser Kamaldeen Ajibade (SAN), are pushing for a postponement of the NEC and back Anyanwu’s reinstatement.

The dispute intensified just 24 hours after Damagum led top PDP officials to a fact-finding meeting with the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) in Abuja.

At a press briefing on Wednesday, Damagum announced Anyanwu’s return and the cancellation of the 100th NEC meeting, describing the moves as difficult but backed by a majority within the party.

However, 11 of the 19 National Working Committee members immediately rejected Damagum’s announcement, affirming their support for the original NEC schedule and opposing Anyanwu’s reinstatement.

The PDP has faced persistent internal turmoil since losing the presidency in 2015, with ongoing leadership tussles, mass defections, and unresolved congress disputes.

To stabilise its structure, the party appointed Setonji Koshoedo as acting National Secretary. But a fact-finding panel led by Governor Kefas Agbu revealed that INEC still recognises Anyanwu as the substantive scribe.

This prompted the 99th NEC to fix June 30 for the 100th session. However, INEC reportedly rejected the notification sent by Damagum alone, citing PDP’s rules that require such correspondence to be co-signed by both the National Chairman and Secretary.

On Sunday, National Publicity Secretary Debo Ologunagba stated that INEC’s role was limited to acknowledging party notifications, not interfering in internal processes. But on Monday, Damagum distanced the party from Ologunagba’s comments, dismissing them as personal opinions.

Flanked by Bauchi Governor Bala Mohammed, former Senate President Bukola Saraki, and other party stalwarts, Damagum announced that instead of the NEC, an expanded National Caucus meeting would now hold on June 30 to chart the way forward.

“So, there will be no NEC meeting on June 30, but an expanded caucus session to deliberate on critical matters and lay the groundwork for the national convention,” Damagum said.

He confirmed Anyanwu’s return, citing INEC’s advice and the urgency of preparing for the upcoming FCT elections.

“INEC has made it clear that we must comply with party rules. The National Secretary is a critical signatory, and we cannot risk complications ahead of a major election. This is a painful but necessary sacrifice for the good of the party,” he added.

Momodu Defends Atiku Amid Age Criticism Ahead Of 2027 Presidential Contest.

Published

ADC chieftain and publisher, Dele Momodu, has dismissed calls for former Vice President Atiku Abubakar to withdraw from the 2027 presidential race, describing the push as unfair and politically motivated.....KINDLY READ THE FULL STORY HERE▶

Momodu was reacting to comments by activist Zekeri Idris Jnr, a supporter of Peter Obi, who urged Atiku to step aside over concerns about his age, which would be about 80 by 2027.

In a post on his X handle on Saturday, Momodu said attention should be focused on holding the government accountable rather than targeting Atiku’s political ambition.

“NSCDC Deploys 2,000 Officers Ahead Of Edo Eid-el-Fitr Celebrations”.

The exchange followed a viral video where Idris insisted that Atiku should support younger aspirants instead of contesting, arguing that voters would not back an elderly candidate.

Idris also suggested that Atiku should act as a statesman and support younger politicians such as Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso and others.

Responding, Momodu cited several world leaders who held office at advanced ages, arguing that experience should not be dismissed in leadership discussions.

He questioned what should disqualify Atiku from contesting, insisting that age alone is not a valid reason.

Atiku, who lost the 2023 presidential election to President Bola Tinubu, is reportedly considering another run in 2027 under the African Democratic Congress (ADC).
