U.S. Issues Security Alert: Warns Citizens to Avoid Abuja Military, Government Sites Amid Rising Tensions

The United States Mission in Nigeria has issued a fresh security alert advising American citizens to steer clear of military and government facilities in Abuja due to escalating global tensions.

In a statement released on Sunday, the U.S. Consulate urged Americans to avoid all non-essential visits to such sensitive locations, citing unspecified global developments that have prompted a reassessment of security conditions worldwide.

The advisory also applies to embassy staff and their families, who are now restricted from visiting military or governmental sites in the Nigerian capital unless it is for official purposes.

Heightened Global Tensions Linked to Iran-U.S. Conflict

The alert follows renewed tensions in the Middle East after the U.S. carried out airstrikes on three Iranian sites, an operation confirmed by former President Donald Trump, who described the attacks as “very successful.” U.S. Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth claimed the strikes severely damaged Iran’s nuclear program. However, Iranian officials argue the attacks targeted peaceful energy infrastructure and violated international law.

Iran, in response, has labeled U.S. interests and military bases worldwide as legitimate targets. On Monday evening, Iranian state media reported missile strikes on a U.S. military base in Qatar, part of an operation dubbed “Blessing of Victory.”

U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio warned that any retaliatory action from Iran—directly or through proxies—would prompt further U.S. military responses.

U.S. Security Advice for Citizens in Nigeria

U.S. citizens in Nigeria have been urged to remain on high alert, particularly in areas frequented by expatriates, government officials, and Westerners.

The embassy’s security recommendations include:

  • Avoiding large gatherings and unnecessary travel

  • Steering clear of military and government buildings

  • Being unpredictable in daily routines

  • Familiarizing oneself with emergency exits in public spaces

  • Reviewing personal security plans regularly

“The safety of U.S. citizens is our top priority. Due to increased global security concerns, U.S. Embassy staff and their families are prohibited from unofficial travel to government or military locations in Abuja until further notice,” the statement read.

Despite the heightened alert, the U.S. Embassy in Abuja and the Consulate General in Lagos remain fully operational.

A Pattern of Recent Alerts in Nigeria

This is not the first recent security advisory from the U.S. Mission in Nigeria. On May 26, 2025, the embassy issued an alert following an explosion near Mogadishu Barracks in Abuja. The incident was caused by an improvised explosive device (IED) reportedly carried by an unidentified individual who was intercepted by military personnel and later killed when the device detonated. Two others were injured.

Additional alerts were issued:

  • March 28, 2025 – U.S. citizens were advised to avoid the National Mosque area during President Tinubu’s Jumat prayers, due to anticipated road closures and crowd control.

  • March 27, 2025 – The embassy warned of potential protests organized by the Islamic Movement of Nigeria (IMN), naming potential hotspots including Unity Fountain, National Mosque, Eagle Square, and more.

  • February 3, 2025 – An advisory was released regarding nationwide protests by the Nigeria Labour Congress over proposed telecom tariff hikes.

Other Security Incidents in Nigeria

Nigeria has recently witnessed a number of violent incidents:

  • Kano State (June 21, 2025) – An explosion at a factory in Mariri Quarters killed five people and injured 15 others.

  • Borno State (June 20, 2025) – A suicide bomber detonated an IED in a Konduga fish market, killing 12 and injuring 18.

Current Situation in Abuja Remains Calm

Despite the U.S. alert, a spot-check by our correspondent revealed no visible signs of heightened tension across key government institutions in Abuja.

Visits to locations including the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Eagle Square, National Assembly, CBN, NTA, and Defence Headquarters showed business as usual, with no noticeable increase in security presence.

Staff at the U.S. Embassy and UK High Commission were also observed carrying out regular duties without restriction or disruption.

Federal Government Responds: Abuja is Safe

In response to the U.S. alert, the Federal Government of Nigeria has assured the public that Abuja remains safe for all residents and visitors.

Officials stated that while they acknowledge the concerns raised, adequate security measures are in place to ensure peace and stability in the Federal Capital Territory.

APC Fires Back at Adeleke Over ₦300bn LG Funds Allegation, Blames Governor for Salary Crisis....KINDLY READ THE FULL STORY HERE▶

The Osun State Chapter of the All Progressives Congress (APC) has responded to claims by Governor Ademola Adeleke that local government officials under the party diverted about ₦300 billion meant for workers’ salaries.

Adeleke had made the allegation during a stakeholders’ meeting, accusing APC-controlled council officials of hijacking funds and forcing the state government to shoulder salary payments for local government workers, teachers, health staff, and pensioners for over a year.

He insisted he would not abandon workers, blaming the situation for delays in executing some state projects.

But in a statement, APC’s Director of Media and Information, Kola Olabisi, dismissed the claims, accusing the governor of misleading the public and shifting blame.

The party alleged that Adeleke was responsible for the salary issues, claiming he refused to release electronic payment vouchers and other financial documents needed for processing payments.

APC also said pension-related records, leave bonuses, cooperative deductions, and other financial data had not been made available despite repeated appeals, insisting that funds were properly accounted for and available for use if approved.

The party urged pensioners and workers to seek clarification, insisting the situation could be resolved if the governor allowed due process to take place.
