Lagos is getting ready to launch electric boats on its waterways, according to an update from LASWA on Monday.....KINDLY READ THE FULL STORY HERE▶

Lagos is set to introduce electric ferries as part of its Omi-Eko project aimed at revolutionizing water transport, according to LASWA General Manager, Damilola Emmanuel. Speaking during a facility tour with delegates from MOWCA and Interferry, Emmanuel assured boat operators that electric boats will operate alongside petrol-powered ones, not replace them.

He emphasized LASWA’s commitment to safety and urged operators to form cooperatives for easier government support. Emmanuel also announced plans for LASWA to collaborate with Interferry, a global ferry safety body, to improve safety standards.

Interferry CEO Mike Corrigan, who led a team of 12 safety experts to Lagos, praised the partnership and said this marks their first engagement in West Africa, with plans to expand across the continent.

The Lagos State Waterways Authority (LASWA) has revealed plans to join the Maritime Organisation of West and Central Africa (MOWCA) and the Interferry Association, as part of its broader strategy to enhance waterway safety through international collaboration and knowledge exchange.

According to LASWA, Lagos has made significant progress in maintaining safety across its inland waterways, but the agency remains committed to further improvements by partnering with global experts.

“We’ve recorded substantial safety achievements on Lagos waterways, but we’re looking to build on this success by working with international bodies that can share best practices and help us elevate our safety standards,” LASWA stated.

Highlighting the significance of one such partnership, LASWA noted that Interferry—an international organisation that promotes ferry safety across continents including Europe, Asia, and the Americas—is collaborating with the agency for the first time in West Africa.

Interferry’s Chief Executive Officer, Mike Corrigan, who led a delegation of 12 safety specialists to Lagos, said the team includes experts in navigation, vessel operations, life-saving protocols, and other aspects of maritime safety. Their mission, he explained, is to offer LASWA guidance based on global experiences and proven strategies.

“LASWA is now an official member of Interferry, which represents nearly 300 ferry operators and stakeholders globally. This partnership provides a two-way opportunity to both share and gain knowledge,” Corrigan said.

He added that Lagos is currently the only African city engaged with Interferry, but the organisation hopes to expand its footprint across the continent.

“This is our third safety conference, and we’re excited to bring it to Africa for the first time. We look forward to continued collaboration and offering our services to any region that wants to strengthen its waterway operations,” Corrigan added.
