Investigations by Saturday PUNCH indicate the attack was part of a calculated push by jihadist factions into Nigeria’s North-Central region, despite prior warnings to the affected communities. At the center of the violence is a terrorist commander identified as Abubakar Saidu, widely known as Sadiku, whose operations now span multiple parts of the country.

From Shekau’s Lieutenant to North-Central Powerbroker
Security sources trace Sadiku’s rise to 2014, when the late Abubakar Shekau, then leader of Boko Haram, allegedly tasked him with expanding the group’s influence beyond the North-East.

As military pressure weakened Boko Haram strongholds in Borno and neighboring states over the years, splinter factions moved westward. Reports indicate that Sadiku established himself along forest corridors spanning Niger and Kwara states, steadily consolidating power.

By 2026, analysts have dubbed him the “Shekau of the North-Central,” citing his operational independence and strict ideological stance.

A self-described counterterrorism analyst on X, MobilisingNigeria, noted that Sadiku initially allied with notorious bandit leader Dogo Gide to extend his influence, later engaging with the Darul Islam faction before it was dismantled by police. Ideological disputes eventually fractured these alliances, pushing Sadiku deeper into forest strongholds.

Kainji Forest: Nigeria’s ‘New Sambisa’
In July 2025, Sadiku reportedly established a base in Kainji Forest Reserve, a vast area spanning Niger and Kwara states. Security experts describe Kainji as Nigeria’s “new Sambisa,” echoing Boko Haram’s former stronghold in the North-East.

A Kwara-based security analyst, Hassan (surname withheld), told Saturday PUNCH that this relocation marked a dangerous insurgent expansion westward. “For over a decade, Boko Haram violence was largely confined to Borno, Yobe, and Adamawa. Now splinter factions are exploiting forests, porous borders, and weak security to push west,” he said.

The reserve allegedly serves as a logistical corridor linking insurgents in the North-East with armed groups in the North-West.

Possible JNIM Connections
Security tracker Brandon Phillips linked Sadiku’s faction to the Woro massacre, noting the attack occurred less than four kilometers from Nuku, where Jama’at Nusrat al-Islam wal-Muslimin (JNIM), an Al-Qaeda affiliate in the Sahel, carried out its first attack in Nigeria in October 2025.

Phillips suggested this proximity could indicate operational overlap between JNIM and Sadiku’s Boko Haram faction, either via cooperation or non-aggression. He also drew parallels between the Woro killings and recent attacks in Papiri, Niger State, signaling a continued southward push.

Researcher Raheem Mutiu added that JNIM fighters were consolidating influence across Kaiama, Baruten, and Borgu areas following the August 2025 arrest of a local faction leader. African conflict analyst James Barnett described the brutality of the Woro massacre as a departure from prior factional attacks, which had largely been retaliatory rather than indiscriminately deadly.

The Warning Letter
Findings reveal Woro had received prior notice. The village head, Salihu Umar, confirmed receiving a letter in Hausa dated 19 Rajab 1447 (January 8), about three weeks before the massacre.

Signed “JAS” (Jama’atu Ahlis Sunna Lidda’adati wal-Jihad), the letter claimed the group intended to meet with community leaders “secretly” to preach, assuring no harm to residents. Umar forwarded copies to the Kaiama Emirate and the Department of State Services office in Kaiama.

The Attack
Eyewitnesses reported that attackers arrived on motorcycles around 5 pm, armed with AK-47 rifles and explosives. They blocked exit routes and stormed the Emir’s palace at 6 pm, dragging out family members and setting the building on fire.

Between 6:30 pm and 8 pm, survivors described an “execution phase,” during which men were rounded up, hands bound, and killed. A military aircraft appeared around 8 pm, temporarily forcing the assailants into nearby bushes. Some residents emerged from hiding around 9 pm, believing the threat had passed.

The attackers then regrouped, reportedly using the call to prayer as a ruse to lure residents out before resuming killings. The violence finally subsided around 2 am as they retreated into the forest with abducted women and children.
