Defections, Threats, And Impeachment: ADC Reacts To Rivers Power Struggle.

Published

on

The African Democratic Congress has disclosed that it is closely observing the rising political tensions in Rivers State, saying it will only take a public position after carefully evaluating ongoing developments.....KINDLY READ THE FULL STORY HERE▶

According to Nivo News, the National Publicity Secretary of the ADC, Bolaji Abdullahi, made this known on Thursday while reacting to the impeachment proceedings initiated against Governor Siminalayi Fubara and his deputy, Professor Ngozi Odu, by the Rivers State House of Assembly. He said the party was taking time to study the unfolding situation before responding.

Political tension in the oil-rich state intensified after lawmakers commenced impeachment actions against the governor, a move that surprised many observers given Fubara’s recent defection to the All Progressives Congress alongside several members of the state legislature.

On December 5, 2025, about 17 lawmakers in the Rivers State House of Assembly defected from the Peoples Democratic Party to the APC. Governor Fubara followed days later, officially joining the ruling party on December 9, 2025. The defections initially raised expectations that aligning with the APC would shield the governor from political threats.

However, the impeachment move has cast doubt on that assumption, particularly amid lingering political rivalry between Governor Fubara and the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike. The rivalry has been marked by sharp public statements from both sides, further deepening divisions within the state.

At different times, Wike had warned that Fubara would face political extinction if he secured a second term, while the governor had openly projected his influence within the APC, citing his party membership card numbered 001 as proof of his standing in Rivers politics.

The ongoing impeachment process marks the third attempt to remove Governor Fubara from office. Earlier efforts were made in 2023 and again in 2025, shortly before a state of emergency was declared in the state.

As events continue to unfold, attention remains focused on whether the latest move by the lawmakers will succeed or if the governor will once again withstand the political pressure surrounding his administration.
