The Cross River State Government and the Niger Delta Development Commission (NDDC) have reiterated their dedication to working together strategically to drive infrastructure and social development throughout the state. Governor Bassey Otu has described the visit by the management team of the Niger Delta Development Commission (NDDC) as timely and crucial for enhancing collaboration between Cross River State and the federal interventionist agency.

Welcoming the delegation at the Executive Council Chambers in Calabar, Governor Otu stressed the state’s readiness for development but noted that limited resources remain a constraint.

“Cross River is development-driven but resource-challenged. Every intervention, whether from the Federation Account or agencies like the NDDC, is translated into meaningful, people-centered projects,” he stated.

The governor expressed gratitude for the renewed commitment of the NDDC to restart abandoned projects and urged for increased inclusion of the state in planning and execution.

“We’ve had no fundamental issues with NDDC. Any setbacks stemmed from poor communication, which we’re now correcting. Our governance approach is legal, structured, and focused on people,” Otu said.

He specifically called for expedited action on key NDDC projects such as the Adiabo-IkoNeto road and the abandoned Ikom Medical Centre. He also drew attention to neglected initiatives like the youth centre in Akpabuyo and urged the Commission to assist with humanitarian efforts, noting that Cross River currently hosts over 54,000 internally displaced persons (IDPs).

Governor Otu further emphasized the importance of incorporating Cross River’s priorities into NDDC’s development agenda.

“There must be deliberate inclusion. While we may not produce oil at the scale of some states, we are a core part of the Niger Delta. Our peaceful disposition should not be met with marginalization,” he asserted.

In response, NDDC Managing Director/CEO Dr. Samuel Ogbuku said the Commission is shifting focus from transactional engagements to transformational development. He highlighted ongoing reforms, including improved institutional governance, salary backlog clearance, and data-driven project execution.

“We are building sustainable structures and completing legacy projects. Our collaboration with organizations like NLNG and NNPC is already yielding high-impact results, including a world-class hospital under construction in Ikom,” he said.

Dr. Ogbuku also formally invited Governor Otu and the people of Cross River to the NDDC’s 25th anniversary celebration slated for July 6–12, 2025, in Abuja. He noted that the grand finale would feature a keynote lecture by Dr. Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala, with President Bola Tinubu as Special Guest of Honour and former President Goodluck Jonathan as Guest of Honour.

“This silver jubilee is a collective milestone for the Niger Delta. Our common ecological and economic challenges must be met with unified development efforts,” Ogbuku added.

Both parties agreed to strengthen technical collaboration immediately, with Governor Otu instructing key state officials to liaise closely with the NDDC Executive Director of Projects (EDP) to fast-track interventions across Cross River.

ADC chieftain and publisher, Dele Momodu, has dismissed calls for former Vice President Atiku Abubakar to withdraw from the 2027 presidential race, describing the push as unfair and politically motivated.....KINDLY READ THE FULL STORY HERE▶

Momodu was reacting to comments by activist Zekeri Idris Jnr, a supporter of Peter Obi, who urged Atiku to step aside over concerns about his age, which would be about 80 by 2027.

In a post on his X handle on Saturday, Momodu said attention should be focused on holding the government accountable rather than targeting Atiku’s political ambition.

The exchange followed a viral video where Idris insisted that Atiku should support younger aspirants instead of contesting, arguing that voters would not back an elderly candidate.

Idris also suggested that Atiku should act as a statesman and support younger politicians such as Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso and others.

Responding, Momodu cited several world leaders who held office at advanced ages, arguing that experience should not be dismissed in leadership discussions.

He questioned what should disqualify Atiku from contesting, insisting that age alone is not a valid reason.

Atiku, who lost the 2023 presidential election to President Bola Tinubu, is reportedly considering another run in 2027 under the African Democratic Congress (ADC).
