Global Honour: Nigeria’s Customs Boss Adeniyi Elected World Customs Chief
The Comptroller General of the Nigeria Customs Service (NCS), Adewale Adeniyi, has been elected as the Chairperson of the World Customs Organisation (WCO) Council—the highest decision-making organ in global customs administration.....KINDLY READ THE FULL STORY HERE▶
The development was announced in a statement released on Saturday by the NCS National Public Relations Officer, Abdullahi Maiwada.
Maiwada said Adeniyi’s election took place during the 145th/146th WCO Council meetings held at the organisation’s headquarters in Brussels, Belgium.
The milestone comes exactly two years after Adeniyi’s appointment as Nigeria’s Customs CG by President Bola Tinubu, and marks the first time a Nigerian will chair the WCO Council since its establishment.
Adeniyi succeeds Edward Kieswetter, Commissioner of the South African Revenue Service.
Reacting to his election, Adeniyi expressed deep gratitude to council members for their vote of confidence, calling the moment both “humbling and historic” for Nigeria and the wider African customs community.
“This honour is not mine alone,” Adeniyi said. “It represents the collective progress of the Nigeria Customs Service and the reforms we’ve undertaken in the past two years. I’m committed to upholding the core values of the WCO, while driving innovation, equity, and stronger collaboration among member nations amid the evolving dynamics of global trade.”
He pledged full support for the WCO’s modernisation agenda and vowed to implement the body’s 2025–2028 strategic plan.
“We are at a pivotal moment in global trade. Customs must now balance facilitation with enforcement, transparency with innovation, and sovereignty with international cooperation. I will work closely with member states and partners to position the WCO as a proactive and visionary institution ready for today’s complex challenges,” he stated.
Adeniyi also commended the work of his predecessor, Edward Kieswetter, whose leadership, he said, brought stability and strategic direction to the council.
He further affirmed his readiness to guide the council’s future sessions with a focus on inclusive dialogue and progress for customs administrations worldwide.
The WCO Council, formed under the Convention Establishing a Customs Co-operation Council, serves as the organisation’s supreme authority. It guides global customs policies and practices and oversees the 185-member WCO’s operations, with a mission to harmonise, modernise, and enhance international trade systems.
As Chair, Adeniyi will provide strategic leadership to the WCO Policy Commission, driving high-level conversations around trade facilitation, digital transformation, revenue optimisation, security, and cross-border cooperation.
