Residents have expressed deep frustration over a prolonged power outage that has persisted since the second week of March 2025, saying it is crippling businesses and severely affecting daily life in their communities.

They are calling on the Ikeja Electricity Distribution Company (IKEDC) to urgently address the situation, particularly by repairing the faulty transformer that has plunged the area into darkness.

According to the affected residents, the streets — classified as Band A consumers — are entitled to 20 to 24 hours of electricity daily. However, they lamented that they have been without power for over three months since the transformer was removed.

The blackout, they said, has not only disrupted economic activities but also left them vulnerable to attacks from criminals who take advantage of the darkness. One resident, Michael, noted that the outage had severely hampered businesses and made it difficult to access water.

“As a united community, we are pleading with Ikeja Electric and relevant authorities to come to our aid,” he said. “Olonade-Akinsola and the surrounding streets have always been peaceful, and we want it to stay that way.”

Another resident, who identified herself as Mama Chioma, added, “We’ve been in total darkness for over three months. Businesses are suffering, and we are appealing to IKEDC to fix this urgently.”

In a letter dated March 16 and addressed to IKEDC, the Olonade-Akinsola community, under the heading “Urgent Request for Band A Intervention on Prolonged Power Outage in Our Community,” stated that multiple complaints had been submitted to IKEDC’s customer service and local office, but no resolution had been reached.

The community association said the blackout has brought commercial activities, healthcare services, and general living conditions to a standstill.

The letter partly reads: “The persistent power outage has significantly disrupted our daily lives, businesses, and access to healthcare. Despite several reports, we have yet to receive a clear timeline for power restoration. The continued blackout has led to economic losses, discomfort, and rising security concerns.”

The community also appealed to the Federal Competition and Consumer Protection Commission (FCCPC) and the Nigerian Electricity Regulatory Commission (NERC) to urgently intervene and ensure IKEDC resolves the crisis.

In an official statement, Liverpool confirmed the diagnosis, adding that Ekitike will be sidelined for several months and will miss the summer tournament with France national football team.

France coach Didier Deschamps also expressed disappointment, describing the injury as a major setback for both the player and the national team, while offering his full support.

Ekitike, who joined Liverpool from Eintracht Frankfurt last July, had enjoyed a strong debut season, scoring 17 goals and registering six assists across all competitions.
