The court, in its July 4 judgment delivered by Justice Binta Nyako, ruled that the Senate’s action not only violated the 1999 Constitution but also denied her constituents their right to representation. The judge urged the red chamber to reconsider its position and facilitate her reinstatement.
In a letter dated July 11, 2025, and addressed to the Senate through her legal representatives, M.J. Numa & Partners LLP, Senator Akpoti-Uduaghan pressed for the full implementation of the court’s decision, making clear her intention to resume legislative duties on Tuesday, July 15.
“The Honourable Court made several findings and orders, including the declaration that the six-month suspension imposed on the Plaintiff was excessive, overreaching, and incompatible with her ability to fulfil the provisions of Section 63 of the 1999 Constitution,” the petition read in part.
“We respectfully urge the Senate to give immediate effect to the clear and binding judgment of the Federal High Court by taking all necessary steps to restore Senator Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan to her legislative responsibilities without further delay,” the letter added.
Akpoti-Uduaghan was suspended on March 6, 2025, following allegations of “unparliamentary conduct” raised through a motion on the Senate floor. She subsequently filed a lawsuit against Senate President Godswill Akpabio, the Clerk of the National Assembly, and the Senate Committee on Ethics, Privileges and Public Petitions.
