The incident occurred on Wednesday, May 19, when warders from Kirikiri Maximum Security Custodial Centre in Apapa transported a convicted armed robber, Haruna Ayo, to the Nigerian Immigration Service (NIS) passport office in FESTAC Town under suspicious circumstances.
Ayo, originally sentenced to life imprisonment for armed robbery—later reduced to a 21-year term—is scheduled for release on October 11, 2025.
According to reports, Ayo was among five inmates selected to carry out menial duties at the residence of the officer in charge of the facility. During the outing, a subordinate officer—allegedly acting on superior orders—requested custody of Ayo and took him to the passport office.
However, immigration officers became suspicious. While waiting to be served, the escorting warder reportedly said, “I need to take him back to the cell,” which raised red flags and prompted officials to detain both Ayo and the officer, escalating the case.
The Nigerian Immigration Service (NIS) alerted the Nigerian Correctional Service (NCoS) Lagos Command at Alagbon, leading to the immediate suspension of two correctional officers.
NCoS spokesperson Umar Abubakar, in a statement on Saturday, confirmed that disciplinary measures had been taken after the attempted passport processing was discovered through automated tracking and inter-agency collaboration.
“This act violates the NCoS rules and is deemed unacceptable,” the statement read. Abubakar said the Civil Defence, Correctional, Fire and Immigration Services Board (CDCFIB), chaired by Interior Minister Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo, approved the suspension of the two implicated officers.
The Controller-General of Corrections, Sylvester Nwakuche, reaffirmed the Service’s zero-tolerance stance on misconduct, warning that any personnel found engaging in acts of corruption, sabotage, or unprofessional conduct would face dismissal.
