Outrage in Kenya as Police Officer Arrested Over Suspect’s Death in Custody
Kenyan authorities announced Friday the arrest of a police officer in connection with the death of a detainee, a case that has triggered public outrage and protests in Nairobi.....KINDLY READ THE FULL STORY HERE▶
Albert Ojwang, 31, died in police custody last weekend after he was detained for allegedly criticizing a senior police official on social media.
While police initially claimed that Ojwang fatally injured himself by repeatedly banging his head against a cell wall, a government pathologist later stated the injuries were “unlikely to be self-inflicted.”
The incident has reignited long-standing concerns about police brutality in Kenya. Protesters are demanding the resignation of Deputy Inspector-General Eliud Kipkoech Lagat—the very officer Ojwang had reportedly criticized before his arrest.
Confirming the arrest, police spokesman Michael Muchiri told AFP that a police constable is now in custody in connection with the death, though he declined to share further details and referred media inquiries to the Independent Policing Oversight Authority (IPOA). IPOA, which is leading the investigation, has yet to issue a comment.
Earlier this week, Muchiri announced that five officers had been suspended from active duty to enable an impartial investigation.
President William Ruto has also weighed in, urging a swift and thorough probe, and vowing on Friday that his administration “will protect citizens from rogue police officers.”
The arrest comes amid rising alarm over custodial deaths in Kenya—IPOA recently revealed that 20 people have died in police custody over the past four months.
Ojwang’s death has become a rallying point for public frustration over increasing reports of abductions and rights abuses following last year’s anti-government protests. Rights groups allege dozens were illegally detained in the aftermath, with some still missing and others targeted for speaking out against the government and President Ruto.

Atiku Opens Up On ADC 2027 Game Plan, Says Consensus Candidate Comes First.
Former Vice President Atiku Abubakar has said the African Democratic Congress (ADC) will first pursue a consensus arrangement before considering a primary election for its 2027 presidential ticket.....KINDLY READ THE FULL STORY HERE▶
Atiku made this known during an interview on Arise Television on Wednesday while discussing the party’s leadership and strategy ahead of the next general election.
He said he is open to backing a consensus candidate if that becomes the party’s collective decision, stressing that such support should not be interpreted as stepping aside.
“It is not about stepping aside, but whether I am willing to support, and yes, I will,” Atiku said.
According to him, the ADC’s first priority is to build internal unity and reach an agreement among stakeholders before considering a competitive primary process.
“Our first option will be to work out a consensus. If that doesn’t happen, then of course we will explore other options. And yes, I will support whoever eventually emerges,” he stated.
Atiku also expressed confidence in the political experience within the party, saying he believes a consensus is achievable and may make a full-scale primary contest unnecessary.
“That remains our preferred path. We will go for primaries if consensus fails, but I honestly do not expect it to get to that stage because we are dealing with mature and experienced politicians,” he added.
His comments come amid growing political consultations and coalition talks as parties begin to position themselves ahead of the 2027 general elections.
