Bayo Onanuga, Special Adviser on Information and Strategy to President Bola Tinubu, has remarked that many Nigerians tend to have a short memory.....KINDLY READ THE FULL STORY HERE▶

Onanuga explained that this limited recollection often prevents Nigerians from fully appreciating the progress President Tinubu has made in his two years in office.

In an interview with Arise News on Friday, Onanuga pointed out that citizens have forgotten how dire the situation was when Tinubu assumed office in 2023.

“Many Nigerians sometimes show signs of forgetfulness. We have very short memories, forgetting where we started from, and instead, we blame President Tinubu for all the problems Nigeria currently faces,” he said.

The presidential aide reminded Nigerians of the fuel scarcity that plagued the country in 2023, noting that Tinubu’s administration has since resolved the crisis.

“I recall that in May 2023, when Tinubu took over, the country was grappling with a fuel shortage. It’s important to remember that during that election period, there was a persistent fuel scarcity,” he stated.

Onanuga also highlighted the challenges faced by the Nigerian National Petroleum Company (NNPC), the main fuel supplier, which was burdened with massive debts and unable to import fuel following subsidy removals.

“NNPC reported that the federal government owed it over 4 trillion Naira and was also indebted to foreign suppliers. What President Tinubu did was to revive NNPC to ensure fuel availability. People easily forget this,” he explained.

Addressing criticism about the fuel subsidy removal, Onanuga argued that sustaining the subsidy was impossible.

“Nigeria simply could not afford to maintain the fuel subsidy regime because the resources were not available. We were spending money that should have been reserved for future generations. The government had to make the right decision,” he insisted.

He further acknowledged that Tinubu’s government has openly recognized the difficulties caused by the policy and has been actively working to mitigate its impact.

“Yes, the policy brought some challenges. However, the administration has been transparent in admitting the consequences of removing the fuel subsidy and has taken many steps to ease the hardship faced by Nigerians,” Onanuga added.

He warned against dragging the state into fresh tension, accusing the state government of attempting to revive old allegations for political advantage.

Adewara said the PDP would not remain silent while what he called “political narratives” are used to influence public perception around a tragic incident that claimed multiple lives in Offa in 2018.

He also urged residents, especially affected families, not to allow their pain to be used for political gains, insisting it is unjust to associate Saraki with the crime.

The party further alleged that the move is aimed at distracting attention from governance challenges in the state.
