Hizbah Not a Substitute for State Police – Sokoto Government Clarifies”

In an exclusive interview with PUNCH, Dr. Mai-Hula emphasized that Hizbah should not be mistaken for a state police outfit but rather seen as a grassroots initiative centered on ethical reorientation through enlightenment, engagement, and collaboration.
“Hizbah is not a state police,” the commissioner asserted.
“It is a community-driven organization that encourages what is right and discourages what is wrong. It operates through preaching, education, and sensitization—not by force.”
Dr. Mai-Hula explained that the Hizbah’s approach to curbing vices such as drug abuse and moral decline is built on partnerships with key agencies including the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA), the Nigeria Police Force, the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC), and various faith-based organisations.
“These collaborations are rooted in mutual respect and community participation,” he noted.
“Through joint awareness campaigns, we offer young people healthier alternatives to harmful lifestyles. The goal is to instill discipline and responsibility—not through punishment, but through persuasion.”
He also stressed the vital role of religious institutions in driving wider social transformation.
“Our places of worship must go beyond being centres of spirituality,” he said.
“They should double as hubs where values, health, and personal discipline are taught. Religious leaders, parents, and the broader community all have a role in tackling issues such as the Almajiri system and youth restiveness.”
Commenting on the recent approval of upkeep allowances for Jumat mosques, Dr. Mai-Hula explained that the initiative is part of the state’s broader agenda for institutional and moral development.
“This support ensures that mosques are adequately maintained and continue to function as moral compasses for the society,” he explained.
He concluded by calling for collective action from all sectors to restore moral standards, combat extremism, and build a safer, more cohesive Sokoto State.
“With cooperation among government, religious institutions, and communities, the revival of moral values is not just an aspiration—it is an achievable goal,” Dr. Mai-Hula said.
