Northern Democrats Urge Opposition to Ditch Old Parties, Start Fresh with New Political Movement!

Published

on

The League of Northern Democrats (LND), a key component of the National Opposition Coalition Group, has advised the coalition to reject existing political parties and immediately begin registering a new political party in preparation for the 2027 general elections.....KINDLY READ THE FULL STORY HERE▶

This recommendation was announced on Saturday by the LND Convener, Dr. Umar Ardo, alongside 12 senior league members, following what they described as a thorough internal review and critical assessment of the coalition’s strategic options.

In a statement released after their discussions, the LND declared, “After careful consideration of the two main proposals — merging into an existing registered party such as the African Democratic Congress (ADC) or the Social Democratic Party (SDP), or registering a new political party — we conclude that the most advantageous path for the opposition is to establish a new party platform. This presents the most viable, principled, and sustainable way forward.”

The group emphasized that forming a new party presents an opportunity for a “national rebirth” based on core values, competence, and a clear vision, unlike the existing parties that are burdened by entrenched internal structures and legal complications.

Dr. Ardo highlighted the risks posed by existing parties, stating, “The ADC, SDP, and similar parties already have deeply rooted ward, local government, and state-level leadership whose tenures are legally binding and resistant to change.

“For example, the ADC chairman in Adamawa publicly affirmed that his mandate, obtained in December 2022, will remain valid until December 2026—well beyond the 2027 nomination period. This situation is common nationwide.”

He cited the breakdown of the NNPP fusion led by Senator Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso as a warning, saying, “That fusion collapsed amid disputes over leadership and candidacy even before primaries were completed. Any rushed merger lacking ideological clarity and unified control risks the same fate.”

Addressing concerns about timing, the LND stated that the period before the 2027 elections is sufficient to build a strong platform—“provided the process begins now.”

“Nigeria’s democratic framework offers ample legal and operational space to register a new party. The challenge is not time, but political will.”

The LND stressed that the new party must reflect Nigeria’s diversity while being grounded in “merit, justice, productivity, and patriotism.”

He further stated that incentive packages would be awarded to teams that perform exceptionally, particularly in handling exam materials and submitting timely reports.
