The 1,028-kilometer highway, slated to begin construction in 2026, will link five countries, creating opportunities for millions of people living along the route.

This development was highlighted during a visit by the Speaker of the ECOWAS Parliament, Rt. Hon. Memounatou Ibrahima, to Nigeria’s Minister of Foreign Affairs, Ambassador Yusuf Tuggar, in Abuja on Friday. The visit aimed to establish a bilateral partnership with Nigeria to support and facilitate the project.

Speaking to reporters after the meeting, Ibrahima—accompanied by the Fourth Deputy Speaker, Billay Tunkara; Secretary General, Mr. Bertin Some; and others—emphasized that the partnership would also seek backing for other ECOWAS projects, focusing on how they will benefit citizens throughout the region.

The Abidjan-Lagos Corridor Highway is a transnational coastal route connecting Côte d’Ivoire to Nigeria, passing through Ghana, Togo, and Benin. It is expected to serve an urban population projected to exceed 170 million by 2050.

Construction is planned to start in 2026 and finish by 2030. The highway is anticipated to stimulate significant economic and industrial activity, enhance connectivity between urban and rural areas, promote cross-border trade, and make regional economies more competitive.

Ambassador Tuggar told reporters that the ECOWAS Parliament, as the democratic voice of the people, plays a key role in the region’s economic and developmental progress. He described the Abidjan-Lagos corridor as a project poised to elevate West Africa’s economic growth and development.

He said, “The ECOWAS Parliament strengthens citizen representation and demonstrates a commitment to constitutional governance. With West Africa’s rapidly growing population, paying close attention to these dynamics is crucial.”

The discussions also covered ways to improve education, advance technology, foster innovation, and empower youth through diverse development programs, enabling them to contribute meaningfully to the region’s economic future.

Further talks focused on a regional partnership for democracy, recently launched with support from the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP), encouraging member states to adopt this framework to strengthen democratic governance.

Ambassador Tuggar praised the ECOWAS regional legislature as a vital institution within the community.
