In a statement released Tuesday by his Special Adviser on Information and Strategy, Bayo Onanuga, President Tinubu also expressed sympathy to the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF), the National Sports Commission, and the wider sports community over the loss of the respected football tactician.
Onigbinde made history as the first indigenous coach of Nigeria’s national team—then called the Green Eagles—in 1982. The President praised him, also a Modakeke high chief, for his substantial contributions to grassroots football and sports administration in Nigeria.
Tinubu noted that Onigbinde played a pivotal role in strengthening football structures and nurturing young talents nationwide. He also remembered the coach’s leadership during the 1984 Africa Cup of Nations, when Nigeria reached the final.
According to the President, Onigbinde’s legacy will be remembered for his discipline, integrity, foresight, and lifelong passion for football. He prayed for the repose of the departed and comfort for his family and loved ones.
The family confirmed the passing in a statement on Monday, signed by Bolade Adesuyi. “With immense gratitude to God for a life well spent, we announce the passing of this great man—a Modakeke High Chief, the first indigenous Nigerian Super Eagles coach, father, husband, grandfather, great-grandfather, brother, and friend, High Chief Festus Adegboye Onigbinde,” the statement read.
The family expressed gratitude for the life he lived and the enduring legacy he left behind, adding: “We thank God for your fulfilled life and your unparalleled contributions to Nigerian and global football.” Funeral arrangements will be announced in due course.
Onigbinde enjoyed a distinguished coaching career spanning several decades in Nigerian and African football. He first led the national team between 1982 and 1984, guiding Nigeria to the 1984 Africa Cup of Nations final, where they were defeated 3-1 by Cameroon.
He returned to coach the national team in 2002, replacing the late Shuaibu Amodu, and led Nigeria to the 2002 FIFA World Cup in Japan and South Korea. Beyond coaching, Onigbinde served as a technical instructor for both the Confederation of African Football (CAF) and FIFA, contributing significantly to football development across Africa and globally.

Gbenjo’s warning comes amid growing controversy surrounding the late singer’s death and burial arrangements, with reports of disagreements among members of his family.
The gospel singer spoke on Tuesday during a night of tributes held in honour of Toluwanisings in Ibadan, Oyo State. He warned against allowing the situation to degenerate into a controversy similar to the one that followed the death of Nigerian singer Mohbad.
Describing the deceased as a devoted Christian and a genuine servant of God, Gbenjo said Toluwanisings was passionate about his faith and had a good relationship with people.
He urged the public to stop fuelling unnecessary controversy over the late singer’s death, particularly through social media platforms such as TikTok and Instagram.
“You can never see Toluwani in the midst of jobless people. He had a good heart. He was a friend to everybody. He served the Lord with all his heart. Don’t turn Toluwani into Mohbad. That madness on TikTok and Instagram must stop. If you are jobless, go and look for a job,” Gbenjo said.
Meanwhile, comedians Ayobami Ajewole, popularly known as Woli Agba, and Olamide Oladimeji, also known as Dele Omo Woli, have threatened legal action against individuals allegedly linking them to Toluwanisings’ death.
Woli Agba disclosed this in a public notice shared on his Instagram page on Sunday.
In the notice issued by their solicitors, Gemgold, the comedians warned members of the public against publishing or circulating allegations they described as false and defamatory against them.
The legal notice maintained that the allegations were baseless and intended to damage the reputations of the two entertainers.
