Outrage as Delta Students Write WASSCE With Phone Lights After Exam Delay
The Delta State Government has expressed dismay over the late conduct of a West African Senior School Certificate Examination (WASSCE) paper at Unity Modern School, Asaba, where students were forced to write their exams using phone torchlights due to a prolonged delay and lack of electricity.....KINDLY READ THE FULL STORY HERE▶
The exam, scheduled for 2 p.m. on Thursday, was reportedly delayed until 6 p.m., prompting the students to complete the paper in near-total darkness. A viral video captured the disturbing scene: invigilators illuminating students’ answer sheets with their phones in an effort to salvage the situation.
A voice in the video, visibly distressed, said, “This exam was meant to start by 2 p.m., but they brought it at 6 p.m. There’s no electricity in the school. These students are writing their WAEC exam with torchlights – and this is in the state capital, not a rural village.”
The affected school is located less than a kilometre from the WAEC office in Asaba.
Responding to the incident on Friday, Delta State Commissioner for Secondary Education, Mrs. Rose Ezewu, condemned the situation and said the state had contacted WAEC officials to prevent a recurrence.
“We are on top of the matter. WAEC is a federal body, not a state agency, but I have reached out to them. Students should not be put under this kind of stress,” Ezewu said. “Imagine children returning home late from an exam center — it’s unacceptable.”
Human rights advocate and convener of the #OperationSaveNigerianChildrenCampaign, Ighorhiohwunu Aghogho, described the situation as a gross violation of child rights.
“This disgraceful episode underscores the rot in our educational system,” he stated. “In 2025, in a state capital, students—some as young as 15—were forced to endure a four-hour delay and sit an exam under torchlight. This is an affront to their dignity and a breach of the Child Rights Act, 2003.”
