The council issued a communiqué following an emergency meeting held at the Ochidoma Palace, themed “Security Concerns, Land Use, and Peacebuilding in Idoma.” The communiqué was signed by the council secretary, Adegbe Sundaeh.
The monarchs also called for a review of land policies to ensure fair and sustainable use of land resources for both farming and herding. They stressed that all armed herdsmen must leave the area immediately to avoid further violence.
“It is unanimously agreed that the state government should engage the Fulani herdsmen and prevail on them to vacate all farmlands,” the communiqué read. “Armed herdsmen should be disarmed and removed to safeguard the lives and livelihoods of farmers.”
The traditional council further appealed to residents to remain vigilant, support security personnel, and report suspicious activity to prevent renewed violence.
Additionally, the monarchs recommended:
-
Increased patrols and deployment of more security personnel in high-risk areas.
-
Arrest and prosecution of individuals violating Benue’s anti-open grazing law.
-
Enforcement of laws against illegal arms and unauthorized land use.
-
Rehabilitation and counseling for communities affected by past conflicts.
The council emphasized the urgency of upholding the rule of law and called for coordinated efforts between the government and security agencies to foster long-term peace and security in the region.
