12 Filipinos Jailed in Nigeria Over Cybercrime, Ordered Deported After Sentence
Twelve Philippine nationals have been sentenced to one year in prison by a Federal High Court in Lagos for cybercrime offences, following a plea bargain deal with Nigeria’s anti-graft agency.....KINDLY READ THE FULL STORY HERE▶
The convicted Filipinos were part of a group of 18 foreign nationals found guilty of cybercrime-related charges—including fraud, impersonation, and cyberterrorism—by Justices Chukwujekwu Aneke and Yellim Bogoro. The remaining six convicts are of various nationalities.
According to a statement from Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) spokesperson, Dele Oyewale, the suspects pleaded guilty after entering a plea agreement. Their sentences will run retroactively from December 10, 2024, the day of their arrest.
Each convict was also fined ₦1 million and ordered to be deported within seven days after serving their prison term and paying the fine. Additionally, all digital devices used in the crimes—including phones, laptops, and routers—were permanently forfeited to the Nigerian government.
The convicted Filipinos include Jean Calatar Maunfo, Donne Reges, Roseann Gonzales, Mary Grace Dela Piazza Camara, Lari Jane Tayae, and Jonilyn Agulto, among others.
Six other individuals—Eliza Gapparova, Diana Kadyrbekova, Nasrine Chouaieb, Jiang Han Hua, Liao Zhang, and Genting International Co. Limited—were also convicted for involvement in cyberterrorism and online fraud recruitment targeting Nigerian youths.
The EFCC described the convicts as part of a sophisticated international cybercrime syndicate known as “HK,” operating from a seven-storey building in Victoria Island, Lagos. The group used VPNs, cloned investment websites, and social media platforms like WhatsApp, Instagram, and Telegram to scam victims in North America and Europe.
The syndicate reportedly employed over 200 Chinese nationals and trained hundreds of Nigerians and other foreigners in executing romance and investment scams. One of the suspects allegedly received over ₦3.4 billion from fraudulent activities.
The December 2024 raid that led to these arrests was described by the EFCC as the largest anti-cybercrime operation in Nigerian history, netting over 193 foreign nationals and 792 suspects in total.
