Speaking at a press briefing in the capital, Mr. Young Piero, who coordinates the Africa, Caribbean, and Pacific Joint Sessions of the African Union Simulation, announced that this year’s event will feature high-level discussions on critical themes including continental unity, a borderless Africa, intra-African trade, cultural integration, and the African Union’s ambitious Vision 2030 project for a single African passport.
Africa Day, which commemorates the founding of the Organisation of African Unity in 1963, serves as an annual moment to reflect on the continent’s achievements and challenges. This year’s edition, according to Piero, is uniquely collaborative, engaging numerous Nigerian and pan-African institutions committed to advancing the continent’s development.
The event will also focus on youth and women’s inclusion, the revival of African cultural values, and the message of patriotism. “Africa is where the treasure lies. We are building an Africa that will emerge as a global powerhouse,” Piero declared.
In a symbolic move, a Liberation Walk is planned to emphasize Africa’s freedom from colonial and systemic constraints. Quadri-Adu Kehinde, President of the Afro-Caribbean Chamber, noted that the walk will reinforce the collective resolve to progress beyond the continent’s historical struggles.
Additionally, forums will be held to discuss economic development and the roles of various demographics, especially youths and women, in Africa’s future. The Planning Committee’s chairman, Phil Roberts, commended the Nigerian government for facilitating the event, emphasizing that patriotism is a critical ingredient in Africa’s journey toward unity and prosperity.
