Escape or Emergency? Bello Awaits July 17 Verdict on Foreign Treatment Request
Justice Maryann Anenih of the Abuja High Court has fixed July 17, 2025, to rule on whether former Kogi State Governor, Yahaya Bello, can be allowed to travel abroad for medical treatment.....KINDLY READ THE FULL STORY HERE▶
According to NIVONEWS, the ruling date was set on Tuesday following submissions from both Bello’s legal team and the prosecution regarding the ex-governor’s application for the temporary release of his international passport.
Bello, currently facing trial over alleged money laundering charges brought by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC), has pleaded not guilty and remains out on bail. His lead counsel, Joseph Daudu, SAN, argued that the application filed on June 20, 2025, sought the release of the passport to enable Bello access urgent medical care abroad.
However, EFCC counsel Chukwudi Enebeli, SAN, opposed the application, warning that granting it could stall court proceedings. He further argued that the motion was an abuse of process, as a similar application had already been filed before the Federal High Court in Abuja, where Bello faces another set of charges.
Daudu, in his rebuttal, insisted that since the EFCC had filed two separate charges in different courts, it was only logical for the defence to make the same request in both courts. According to NIVONEWS, he emphasized that the bail granted in both matters remains valid and that the medical trip was not an attempt to evade trial.
Justice Anenih, after hearing both arguments, adjourned the matter to July 17 for a ruling. According to NIVONEWS, the decision is being closely watched by legal observers, given the political weight and legal complexity surrounding Bello’s multiple prosecutions.
