Residents said the tragic incident occurred around 2 p.m. on Tuesday, when hundreds of local vigilantes from Wase LGA were en route to known bandit enclaves but were ambushed near Kukawa. The attackers, believed to be hiding in the Government Forest Reserve bordering Bauchi and Taraba states, launched a surprise assault.
Aliyu Baffa, Chairman of the Kukawa vigilante group, told journalists that “over 70 vigilantes were killed” in the attack. According to NIVONEWS, Baffa added that more bodies could still be found as search operations continue across nearby farmlands and forests.
“We have already buried more than 60 of the 70 bodies here in Kukawa alone,” Baffa revealed. “The survivors said they were vastly outnumbered and overwhelmed.”
Musa Ibrahim, a resident of Bunyun, also confirmed the incident, stating that 10 more vigilantes were killed in his community during the coordinated assault. He said the attackers not only killed but also razed several homes, leaving the area in ruins.
According to NIVONEWS, Governor Caleb Mutfwang had previously raised alarms over rising insecurity in Plateau State, revealing that at least 64 communities have fallen under the control of armed bandits. The governor has since inaugurated a fact-finding committee tasked with developing a sustainable strategy to combat the menace.
