$4 Billion Probe: Lawyers, CSOs Demand Transparency Over Kyari’s NNPCL Tenure
A coalition of legal professionals and civil society organizations (CSOs) has filed a Freedom of Information (FOI) request to the Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation Limited (NNPCL), demanding detailed records on refinery rehabilitation projects carried out during the tenure of former Group Chief Executive Officer, Mele Kyari.....KINDLY READ THE FULL STORY HERE▶
The request is part of a broader campaign for accountability led by the Concerned Citizens Against Corruption, which is also petitioning the Attorney General of the Federation, the Ministry of Finance, and the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) to investigate Kyari’s six-year stewardship of the corporation.
At the core of their concern is the reported $4 billion spent on revamping the Port Harcourt, Warri, and Kaduna refineries. The group, led by Comrade Ogwuche Emmanuel, alleges that the cost of these projects was heavily inflated, and accuses Kyari’s administration of misallocating crude oil revenues, mismanaging funds for the AKK Gas Pipeline Project, and engaging in fraudulent fuel subsidy practices and oil exploration efforts with no tangible results.
The FOI request seeks comprehensive documentation on payments made to contractors and consultants, details of crude oil allocations, and financial transactions linked to pipeline security. It also demands records concerning foreign financing and budgetary allocations for the AKK Project, documentation on fuel imports, and the terms of crude-backed loans issued during Kyari’s tenure.
In its appeal, the group stressed that transparency is essential to restoring public trust in NNPCL’s operations, adding that credible intelligence suggests a systemic culture of financial malpractice under Kyari’s leadership.
“As citizens directly affected by these issues, we require these disclosures to support judicial action. The scale of alleged corruption and economic sabotage necessitates immediate and full transparency,” the group stated in its letter to NNPCL.
