Mark Dismisses Okowa’s Defection as Non-Impactful, Questions His Political Relevance

Published

on

Jacob Mark, former National Legal Adviser of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), has dismissed the recent defection of Ifeanyi Okowa, former governor of Delta State, to the All Progressives Congress (APC), stating it would not significantly impact the PDP.....KINDLY READ THE FULL STORY HERE▶

Mark emphasized that Okowa’s move to the APC lacked any substantial political advantage, pointing out that the former governor was unable to deliver his state for the PDP in the 2023 elections, despite running as the vice-presidential candidate.

Speaking on Arise News, Mark explained that Okowa’s failure to secure his home state’s support for the PDP raises doubts about the political force his defection might bring to the APC. He stated, “If he could not deliver Delta as a running mate, it’s hard to see how his defection will cause a political tsunami.”

The defection, which also saw Delta State Governor Sheriff Oborevwori join the APC, alongside several National Assembly members and local government chairmen, has sparked reactions within the political sphere. However, Mark questioned whether the move would truly resonate with the electorate, especially since Delta State voters have historically demonstrated independence in their voting decisions.

Mark also underscored that defections in Nigerian politics are often driven by personal interest rather than ideology. He pointed out that political shifts are commonplace, with individuals changing allegiance to either gain political advantage or secure appointments, rather than out of genuine satisfaction with governance.

In conclusion, Mark reiterated that while defections are part of the democratic process, their long-term effect on party dynamics is often overestimated, especially when driven by personal agendas rather than public sentiment.

Nigeria–US Coalition Slams US Lawmaker Over Call To Sack Matawalle.

Published

A coalition of Nigerians in the United States has criticised remarks by US lawmaker Kimberly Daniels calling for the removal of Minister of State for Defence, Bello Matawalle, describing her position as ill-informed and detached from Nigeria’s security realities.....KINDLY READ THE FULL STORY HERE▶

News reports that Daniels made the call in a Facebook post, citing a recent security assessment report which she said raised concerns about Matawalle’s performance and past tenure as governor of Zamfara State. She urged a leadership review within Nigeria’s defence ministry.

In response, the Nigerian-American Coalition for Strategic Stability said the comments risk undermining Nigeria’s sovereignty and misrepresent the complexity of the country’s security challenges.

In a statement signed by its convener, Dr. Maxwell Akarachi, the group argued that insecurity in parts of the country stems from deep-rooted structural issues, cross-border criminal activity, and evolving threats, rather than the actions of a single official.

The coalition said it was concerning that a foreign lawmaker would take such a stance without fully understanding ongoing security efforts, adding that Nigeria has recorded some progress under Matawalle’s watch, including coordinated military operations and improved intelligence sharing.

It also warned against narratives it believes are aimed at weakening public confidence in Nigeria’s defence institutions, stressing that such matters should be addressed through local legal and institutional channels rather than external commentary.

While acknowledging the need for accountability, the group urged that allegations against public officials be handled through due process, not international pressure campaigns.

The coalition further called on international partners to engage Nigeria with accuracy and respect, and urged citizens at home and abroad to support national institutions in the fight against insecurity.

It also directed the ministry’s management to explain why a non-professional driver was assigned such responsibility in the first place.
