Tinubu’s Intervention in Rivers Sparks Concerns Over Sole Administrator’s Actions
The recent appointment of retired Vice Admiral Ibok-Ete Ibas as Sole Administrator of Rivers State has generated significant political unrest and public debate. Many observers argue that Ibas’s conduct since assuming office has undermined the goal of restoring stability to the volatile oil-rich state.....KINDLY READ THE FULL STORY HERE▶
On March 18, 2025, President Bola Tinubu declared a state of emergency in Rivers State, suspending Governor Siminalayi Fubara, Deputy Governor Ngozi Odu, and all elected House of Assembly members for six months. Tinubu justified the move as necessary to curb rising tensions between the state’s executive and legislative arms. However, critics believe the president downplayed the underlying conflict between Governor Fubara and his predecessor, current FCT Minister Nyesom Wike.
Despite the backlash, Ibas was sworn in the following day at the Presidential Villa, with key officials including the Attorney General of the Federation, Lateef Fagbemi, in attendance.
Since his appointment, Ibas has systematically dismantled the governance structures built under Fubara. He appointed a naval officer, Commodore Aminu Shehu, as Chief of Staff and dismissed all political appointees. He suspended heads of state ministries, departments, and agencies, reconstituted boards, and controversially appointed sole administrators for all 23 local government areas—actions that directly violate a Federal High Court ruling.
Legal experts and human rights advocates, including Femi Falana (SAN), have criticized these moves, asserting that they contravene Tinubu’s own official proclamation on the state of emergency. Falana has called on the president to remove Ibas for exceeding his mandate.
The House of Representatives has also expressed concern, warning Ibas to respect the constitutional requirement to report his activities to the National Assembly. Meanwhile, 11 PDP governors have taken legal action against Ibas’s appointment.
Human rights advocate Ann-Kio Briggs has accused Ibas of intensifying the crisis instead of resolving it. Similarly, PDP chieftain Segun Sowunmi has urged political leaders to focus on reconciling Fubara and Wike rather than escalating the conflict. He argued that President Tinubu should direct Wike to focus on his duties in Abuja and allow the elected governor to serve the people of Rivers State.
Sowunmi emphasized that only President Tinubu has the authority to lift the state of emergency and restore democratic governance. He urged stakeholders to stop fueling the crisis and instead promote peace between the two political figures.
While Tinubu continues to place blame on Fubara, many believe that Wike, the root of the political crisis, has not been held accountable. The pressure now lies on the president to guide Ibas towards upholding democratic norms and fostering peace in Rivers State.

Mohammad Mokhber disclosed this on Wednesday during an interview on State TV, emphasizing that Tehran does not trust Washington and sees no grounds for dialogue.
According to Mokhber, Iran is prepared to continue the ongoing conflict in the Middle East for as long as necessary.
“We will not enter into any negotiations with the US. The Americans cannot be trusted. We can sustain the war for as long as we choose,” he said.
He added that previous interactions with the United States have left Iran doubtful about any diplomatic efforts.
His remarks come amid heightened tensions following reports that Khamenei was killed in joint US-Israeli strikes.
Meanwhile, Iran has announced plans for a three-day state funeral in honour of the late leader. The official Islamic Republic News Agency reported that members of the public will be allowed to pay their respects at the Imam Khomeini Grand Mosque in Tehran.
“Starting at 10:00 pm (1830 GMT), the faithful will be able to pay their final respects to the body of the martyred guide of the nation at the Imam Khomeini Grand Mosque,” the agency quoted a statement from the Islamic Development Coordination Council as saying.
Khamenei, who was 86 at the time of his death, is expected to be laid to rest in his hometown of Mashhad in northeastern Iran.

According to reports, Cameroon made a bright start at the Military Stadium, scoring first and hoping to build on their 1–0 victory over Nigeria in last weekend’s earlier encounter. However, the momentum soon shifted.
Christiane opened the scoring to give the Lionesses an early advantage and excite the home fans. Nigeria quickly regrouped, with Chiwendu Ihezuo equalising before Omorinsola Babajide and Michelle Alozie sealed the comeback with well-taken goals.
Reflecting on the match, Ndoumou admitted his side struggled after their promising start.
“We allowed Nigeria to dominate and push us back into our half. The goals came in quick succession,” he said after the game.
Nigeria, under head coach Justine Madugu, displayed improved intensity and sharper movement in the second half, applying sustained pressure that forced defensive lapses from the hosts.
Babajide played a key role in the turnaround, scoring once and providing an assist in an impressive performance that underscored her growing importance to the team.
“Great reaction from the team today,” the AS Roma Women forward wrote on .
The Super Falcons will now shift their attention to preparations for the 2026 Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON).
