Legal Ethics in Crisis: Senior Advocate Raises Alarm Over Rot in Nigeria’s Legal Profession”
A Senior Advocate of Nigeria (SAN), Chukwudi Enebili, has expressed deep concern over the growing erosion of ethical standards within the legal profession, warning that the trend poses a grave threat to the future of justice in Nigeria.....KINDLY READ THE FULL STORY HERE▶
Enebili, who chairs the 2025 Law Week Planning Committee of the Nigerian Bar Association (NBA), Ikeja Branch, made the remarks during a press briefing held at the branch’s centre on Friday. He noted that Nigeria is currently experiencing turbulent times, with the legal sector also bearing the brunt.
“We are in a very challenging period—not just as a nation, but also within the legal profession,” Enebili said. “This year’s theme was deliberately chosen to prompt reflection on our roles as professionals and as citizens.”
The 2025 edition of the NBA Ikeja Annual Law Week is themed “Preserving the Legal Profession for Tomorrow”, a theme Enebili described as both timely and imperative, considering the visible decline in professionalism and ethics among lawyers in recent years.
The week-long event commenced on Friday, July 11, with Jumat prayers at the Old Secretariat Mosque, followed by a church thanksgiving service at the Bar Centre on Sunday.
An opening cocktail is scheduled for Monday, July 14, at 5:00 p.m. at the Bar Centre. The main plenary session will be held on Tuesday, July 15, at the Marriott Hotel in Ikeja, where the Chairman of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC), Ola Olukoyede, will deliver the keynote address.
Tuesday’s activities will also feature a “Young Lawyer Session” themed “Walking Steadily to the Top”, celebrating 30 young legal professionals who have achieved notable milestones in their careers. The day will conclude with a Chairman’s Dinner in honour of Chief Emeka Ozoani (SAN).
Plenary sessions will resume on Wednesday, July 16, at the Providence Hotel in GRA Ikeja, with Prof. Fabian Ajogwu (SAN) delivering the keynote address. Other distinguished speakers include Prof. Kemi Pinheiro (SAN), Prof. Foluke Dada (Dean of Law, Caleb University), Oyinkansola Badejo-Olusanya, Mr. Ebun-Olu Adegboruwa (SAN), Mr. Olalekan Ojo (SAN), and Mr. Dele Adesina (SAN).
The week will culminate with the Alao Aka-Bashorun Memorial Lecture on Thursday, July 17, also at the Providence Hotel.
In his welcome address, NBA Ikeja Branch Chairman, Mr. Adeniyi Quadri, stressed that the 2025 Law Week is more than a ceremonial gathering, describing it as a “call to action.”
“This year’s event takes a hard look at the future of the legal profession,” Quadri said. “If we don’t act now to preserve its integrity and legacy, there may soon be nothing left to defend. Law Week has always served as a vital forum for bold conversations on national and international issues. This year, we are raising the stakes.”
