Nigerian Church Declares War on LGBTQ Clergy After Gay Archbishop Emerges in Wales

Published

on

The Church of Nigeria (Anglican Communion) has strongly condemned the election of Rt. Rev. Cherry Vann as the new Archbishop of Wales, calling it yet another sign of the global church’s drift from the foundational Christian faith.....KINDLY READ THE FULL STORY HERE▶

Vann, who is openly homosexual and in a civil partnership with Wendy Diamond, was elected on Wednesday, July 30, 2025, as the 15th Archbishop of Wales. She had previously served as Bishop of Monmouth for five years and now succeeds Bishop Andrew John, who retired in July after leading the Church in Wales for three and a half years.

Her election, secured through a two-thirds majority vote at the Electoral College held at St Pierre Church and Hotel in Chepstow, has sparked sharp criticism from the Nigerian Anglican leadership.

In a statement issued Sunday, the Primate of the Church of Nigeria, Most Rev’d Henry Ndukuba, declared that the Nigerian Church will not recognise Vann’s appointment. He described her emergence as Archbishop as a clear indication that segments of the global Anglican Communion are abandoning the authority of Scripture in favour of a postmodern ideology devoid of divine endorsement.

According to Ndukuba, the election of Vann further validates the Church in Wales’ departure from biblical truth, undermining its credibility in mission, evangelism, and upholding the core of Anglican orthodoxy.

“We recall with sadness her passive and complicit role during the same-sex crisis that fractured the Anglican Communion,” he said. “Her story echoes the controversial tenure of Most Rev. Katherine Jefferts Schori, the 26th Presiding Bishop of the Episcopal Church in the U.S., under whom faithful Anglicans faced intense persecution from 2006 to 2015.”

Citing Scripture, the Primate warned that many in the church now pursue teachings aligned with their personal desires rather than sound doctrine, turning their ears from the truth to embrace falsehoods.

He urged faithful Anglicans worldwide to reject and expel doctrinal rebels, and to realign with orthodox Anglican bodies such as GAFCON, which continue to uphold scriptural truth across troubled dioceses.

“The Church of Nigeria believes this is a critical moment that demands fervent prayer for the Church in Wales. We also hope the Church of England will not follow this path,” the statement concluded. “We must convey a clear message: only true repentance and godliness can restore relevance. Without it, judgment awaits those who compromise the faith.”

He stated that although over ₦20 billion was approved for the procurement of security equipment, only about ₦1.7 billion—roughly 7 percent—has reportedly been disbursed so far.

Shehu questioned the possible impact of the funding gap on troop safety, suggesting it could be linked to growing battlefield casualties.

He also raised concerns about reported cases of soldiers abandoning their posts, implying that insufficient equipment and support may be contributing factors.

The commentator further asked what had become of funds borrowed in the name of addressing insecurity, calling for accountability in their use.

Shehu also suggested that delays or restrictions in releasing security funds could have serious consequences for both military personnel and civilians.

He expressed worry that different levels of government may not be fully meeting their responsibilities in ensuring the safety of lives and property.

She emphasized that her focus is on expanding the existing trade framework between Nigeria and Israel, describing it as essential to deepening economic ties and improving collaboration between both nations.

Ufochukwu also noted that her agenda extends beyond trade, including the promotion of Nigeria’s culture, agriculture, and investment opportunities, as well as supporting training programmes in cybersecurity and information technology.

She assured stakeholders of her commitment to fully delivering on her responsibilities, adding that sustained communication and cooperation would be important in achieving set goals.

Participants at the forum highlighted the need for Nigeria to address structural barriers affecting business growth, while pointing to Israel’s innovation-driven economy as a model worth studying.

One of the attendees, Pastor Henry Opara, called for formal bilateral agreements, stressing that most current business interactions between both countries are informal and based on personal relationships rather than structured government frameworks.

He argued that stronger government-to-government agreements would provide clearer rules and more stable economic engagement.

Similarly, the National Coordinator of the Nigeria–Israel Business Forum, Mrs. Florence Osuji, urged both countries to renew official trade agreements, noting that some existing arrangements have expired, leaving current trade relations without strong institutional backing.
