Senator Akpoti-Uduaghan recently made two failed attempts to return to plenary after her six-month suspension by the Senate. She cited a Federal High Court ruling in Abuja, which she claimed invalidated her suspension. However, her attempts were rebuffed by Senate officials.
In a statement issued on Monday, Kenny Okolugbo, a media aide to Akpabio, argued that Akpoti-Uduaghan’s own appeal to the Court of Appeal contradicts her claim that the lower court reinstated her.
Referring to Ground 23 in her appeal in the case Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan v. Clerk of the National Assembly & Ors, Okolugbo noted that the senator herself challenged the High Court for not explicitly setting aside her suspension. He said this undermines her claim of reinstatement.
“The trial judge acknowledged that the suspension was excessive and ultra vires but failed to nullify it. This is why she went to the Appeal Court. Yet, she publicly claimed that the suspension was overturned,” he explained.
Okolugbo further accused the senator of staging a “media stunt” when she showed up at the National Assembly on July 22, 2025, accompanied by cameras and supporters. He described the move as a premeditated act of political theatre.
“There was no official court directive served to the Clerk of the Senate or the leadership mandating her reinstatement. Instead, she stormed the complex with a crowd, turning a constitutional matter into a spectacle,” he said.
Reaffirming the Senate’s stance, Okolugbo said due process would have been followed had the court ordered her reinstatement. He noted that the Clerk would have formally notified Senate leadership, which would then deliberate on the matter.
He insisted that the senator’s suspension was neither personal nor politically motivated, but grounded in the Senate’s rules and constitutional provisions, particularly Section 60 of the 1999 Constitution and the chamber’s Standing Orders.
“All she had to do was apologise publicly, and the suspension would have been lifted. Even the Brekete Family advised her to do so, but she declined,” Okolugbo added.
He also clarified that her absence had not hindered legislative activities in her Kogi Central district, citing progress on some of her sponsored bills, including one to establish a Federal Medical Centre in Ihima.
Okolugbo cautioned that politicising the issue could damage the cause of female political inclusion, stating, “Nigeria has only four female senators. Weaponising gender and distorting facts does a disservice to genuine struggles for representation and equality.”
