EFCC Drags Bauchi Accountant-General to Court Again Over Jaw-Dropping N1.4bn Scam
The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) has re-arraigned the Accountant General of Bauchi State, Sirajo Muhammad Jaja, and a bureau de change operator, Aliyu Abubakar, before the Federal High Court in Maitama, Abuja, over alleged money laundering and criminal diversion of N1.4 billion in public funds.....KINDLY READ THE FULL STORY HERE▶
The pair appeared before Justice O.A. Egwuatu on Tuesday, facing five amended charges relating to the laundering, theft, and unlawful conversion of Bauchi State Government funds.
Abubakar, who is being prosecuted under the name Jasfad Resources Enterprise—a purported bureau de change—was named alongside Jaja. Also indicted but currently at large are Abubakar Muhammed Hafiz, Ari Manga, and Muhammed Aminu Bose.
According to the EFCC, the alleged offences occurred in Abuja between October 29 and December 31, 2024. The anti-graft agency claimed that the accused converted N1,192,234,627 in public funds from the Bauchi State Sub-Treasury Account at United Bank for Africa (Account No. 1018819396) into the account of Jasfad Resources Enterprise (Account No. 1023444660), also at UBA.
In addition, between January 3 and March 14, 2025, the defendants were alleged to have laundered another N296,191,000 through the same channel.
These acts, the EFCC stated, violate Section 18(2)(b) and are punishable under Section 18(3) of the Money Laundering (Prevention and Prohibition) Act, 2022.
Both defendants pleaded not guilty.
Following their plea, defence counsel Gordy Uche (SAN) and Chris Uche (SAN) asked the court to allow their clients to continue under the bail conditions previously granted. They also requested an adjournment to review the amended charges.
Prosecuting counsel Abba Mohammed (SAN) did not oppose the bail request.
Justice Egwuatu approved the plea, maintaining the existing bail conditions and postponing the trial to July 21, 2025.
