Nursing and Midwifery Council of Nigeria Reopens Verification Portal for Nurses and Midwives
Nursing and Midwifery Council of Nigeria Reopens Verification Portal for Nurses and Midwives....KINDLY READ THE FULL STORY HERE▶
The Nursing and Midwifery Council of Nigeria (NMCN) has reopened its verification portal, allowing Nigerian nurses and midwives to submit verification requests once again. This development is a significant relief for healthcare professionals who had faced challenges due to the portal’s sudden deactivation earlier this year.
Verification Portal Now Accessible
Checks on the NMCN website on Saturday confirmed that the verification portal is now live. Nurses and midwives can proceed with their verification requests, a crucial step for many who work abroad. The portal displayed the message, “Good news, verification requests are back online,” and emphasized that expiration dates on renewal applications will now be calculated based on the date of application submission.
National Response
Anthony Ijeoma, a nurse at Nursingworld Nigeria, also confirmed the portal’s reopening. Ijeoma commended the collaborative efforts between the National Association of Nigeria Nurses and Midwives (NANNM) and the NMCN for addressing this concern. “I commend NMCN for listening to reason and reopening its verification portal for nurses within and outside the country,” he stated.
Impact of the Portal Deactivation
Earlier reports by PUNCH Online revealed that the abrupt deactivation of the verification portal in February led to significant challenges for Nigerian nurses and midwives working abroad. Many nurses in countries such as the United Kingdom and the United States found themselves in violation of visa conditions and employment laws due to the inability to obtain necessary verification from NMCN. Some were even forced to return to Nigeria as a result.
New Guidelines on Verification Requests
In February, NMCN issued a circular outlining new guidelines for certificate verification requests. According to the circular, nurses and midwives must have at least two years of post-qualification experience before requesting verification. Additionally, they need a letter of good standing from their employer and their last nursing training institution, which should be addressed directly to the NMCN Registrar/CEO. This sparked backlash among healthcare professionals, who argued that the guidelines were restrictive and hindered their ability to pursue career opportunities abroad.
Protests and Legal Action
The new guidelines led to widespread protests from state councils and chapters of the National Association of Nigeria Nurses and Midwives in various states, including Lagos, Ogun, Kwara, and Kaduna. Some nurses took legal action against the NMCN, though the case was eventually withdrawn. On February 27, the Nigerian House of Representatives intervened, advising the NMCN to halt the implementation of the revised guidelines.
Ongoing Concerns
The professional body believes the council’s actions were part of a larger effort to reduce the emigration of healthcare workers from Nigeria. Many healthcare professionals have sought opportunities abroad due to better working conditions and career advancement prospects. This issue is seen as a key factor in the council’s decision to introduce stricter verification guidelines.
NANNM’s Appeal to the Federal Government
On Friday, the National Association of Nigeria Nurses and Midwives (NANNM) urged the Federal Government to take swift action to address the pressing concerns of the nursing community. NANNM President Michael Nnachi listed some of the association’s key demands, including the reopening of the certificate verification portal, payment of salaries to NMCN staff, constitution of the board, and a review of the salary structure for nurses.
