Four Hundred Nigerians Deported from UAE Amid Diplomatic Tensions....KINDLY READ THE FULL STORY HERE▶

Four hundred Nigerians have been deported from the United Arab Emirates (UAE) and arrived back in Nigeria, according to a report by the Nigerian Television Authority. This group of deportees was received at Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport, Abuja, by officials from various government agencies, including the Office of the National Security Adviser, the National Commission for Refugees, Migrants, and Internally Displaced Persons, the National Agency for the Prohibition of Trafficking in Persons (NAPTIP), the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA), and other relevant stakeholders.

The group included 90 females and 310 males, marking another significant wave of deportations in light of the ongoing diplomatic disputes between Nigeria and the UAE. The Federal Government had previously repatriated 190 Nigerians from the UAE in July 2024, according to a report by PUNCH Online.

Background on Nigeria-UAE Diplomatic Relations

Tensions between Nigeria and the UAE have been brewing for nearly two years, following a visa ban the UAE imposed on Nigerians. This ban was part of a broader diplomatic dispute between the two nations, with one major issue involving Dubai’s Emirates Airline halting flights to Nigeria. The airline’s decision stemmed from Nigeria’s inability to remit an estimated $850 million in revenue to the UAE due to Central Bank restrictions.

In June 2024, after several rounds of diplomatic negotiations, the Nigerian government announced that the visa ban on Nigerians would soon be lifted. At the time, it was reported that Nigeria had paid 98% of the $850 million owed to the UAE, indicating significant progress in resolving the issue. By July 2024, the UAE government confirmed that visa restrictions on Nigerians had been lifted.

The Current Wave of Deportations

Despite progress in diplomatic negotiations, these deportations signal that tensions remain between both nations. The UAE government has not provided specific reasons for the mass deportations, but reports suggest that there may still be unresolved issues related to migration and security concerns.

“To be honest, I feel in the same position we were after Arsenal,” Maresca noted, explaining that testing new setups—such as utilizing centre-back Guéhi in midfield—is part of finding necessary solutions.
