A Senior Magistrate Court in Kano State, under the leadership of Ibrahim Abubakar Mansur, has dismissed the First Information Report (FIR) against 37 protesters advocating for good governance. This decision was made during a session held at the Goron Dutse Correctional Centre in Kano, marking a significant win for the protesters involved in the #EndBadGovernance movement.
On Friday, the court ruled to discharge the 37 protesters, while also granting bail to 48 others. However, each of these individuals must deposit N1,000,000 (One Million Naira) at the Kano State High Court Registry and present two reliable sureties.
Yusha’u Sani Yankuzo, an attorney from the Centre for Human Rights and Social Advancement (CEFSAN), confirmed the court’s decisions and indicated that the case has been adjourned to September 18, 2024, for further proceedings.
The protesters were represented by a coalition of legal professionals from various organizations, including CEFSAN, the Nigerian Bar Association (NBA) Ungogo Branch, the NBA Kano Branch, the Legal Aid Council of Nigeria, and the National Human Rights Commission (NHRC). This diverse legal representation played a crucial role in advocating for the rights of the protesters.
Earlier reports from SaharaReporters indicated that at least 36 #EndBadGovernance protesters were discharged unconditionally, while 35 others were granted bail at the Senior Magistrate Court in Gyadi-Gyadi, Kano State. This court session was presided over by Hadiza Rabi’u Bello and reviewed the cases of over 70 protesters.
