The Israeli army is committed to utilizing every available resource to bring back hostages still held in Gaza, according to military spokesman Daniel Hagari. Speaking to a group of foreign journalists in the war-torn city of Rafah, Hagari emphasized that this mission is a primary objective of their military operations.
“We need to do everything, everything we can, in all means, to bring them back home,” Hagari stated, reinforcing the determination of the Israeli forces to achieve this goal. His comments come in the wake of a tragic incident in which Hamas militants killed six hostages in a tunnel, intensifying grief and frustration among the Israeli public regarding the government’s response to the hostage situation.
The recent conflict was ignited by an unprecedented attack by Hamas, which resulted in the deaths of 1,205 individuals, mostly civilians, as per an AFP tally based on Israeli official figures. This grim statistic includes hostages who were killed while in captivity. Currently, Hamas has taken 251 hostages, with 97 remaining in Gaza, including 33 that the Israeli military believes are already dead.
Israel’s retaliatory actions have led to significant casualties in Gaza, with the health ministry reporting at least 41,118 deaths. The UN human rights office indicates that a majority of the deceased are women and children, raising serious humanitarian concerns amid the ongoing conflict.
Hagari addressed the destruction witnessed in Rafah, revealing that the Israeli military aims to dismantle Hamas’s extensive network of underground tunnels. “You have a maze of tunnels here, a maze of tunnels here in Rafah, underneath the houses. This is why the destruction,” he explained, noting that every point in Rafah is affected by this underground system. “In order to defeat Hamas, we need to take control of this underground system.”
The military also showcased the Philadelphi Corridor, a narrow strip of land that has become a critical focus in discussions aimed at achieving a possible ceasefire. Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has stated that maintaining control of this corridor is vital to prevent arms smuggling into Gaza from Egypt.
As negotiations continue, Hamas is demanding a complete Israeli withdrawal from the territory, complicating the path toward peace. The situation remains tense, with calls for international media access to Gaza being denied by Israel throughout the conflict, now entering its 12th month.
