Weather Alerts: NiMet Urges Emergency Planning to Combat Flooding....KINDLY READ THE FULL STORY HERE▶
The Nigerian Meteorological Agency (NiMet) has urged governments, emergency managers, and key stakeholders to prioritize weather forecasts in their planning efforts. This call to action was delivered by Mrs. Glory Onyegbule, NiMet’s Director of Applied Meteorological Services, during a National Emergency Coordination Forum organized by the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) in Abuja.
Onyegbule highlighted the critical role of NiMet in forecasting Nigeria’s weather patterns and providing climate predictions across the nation. The agency’s annual seasonal climate predictions help stakeholders, particularly emergency managers, to anticipate and prepare for weather-related challenges such as rainfall and climatic shifts.
“We issue predictions on the onset dates of the rainy season, the amount of expected rainfall, and its duration,” she explained. NiMet’s predictions are also compared against historical data, identifying key deviations. Regions like the North East, particularly Maiduguri and Bauchi, experienced significant changes in weather patterns, and NiMet worked diligently to ensure these insights were made available to Nigerians in time.
Climate Change and Its Impact
Onyegbule stressed that the ongoing flooding in Borno State is a clear result of climate change. She encouraged emergency responders to act swiftly and advised authorities managing dams to ensure these facilities are maintained to protect against future flooding.
“Flooding is likely to persist unless proactive measures are taken, especially in flood-prone areas,” Onyegbule warned. “We should listen to weather reports and apply them.”
Collaborative Efforts to Aid Flood Victims
Trond Jensen, Head of the United Nations Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA), shared the organization’s ongoing efforts to assist flood victims in Borno. Speaking from Maiduguri, Jensen noted that OCHA is collaborating with NEMA, state agencies, and the military to provide essential aid.
“Our team is ensuring that people affected by the flooding have access to food, clean water, and shelter to prevent disease outbreaks,” Jensen said. He added that OCHA has activated a humanitarian response system to map the needs of vulnerable populations and coordinate aid distribution efficiently.
Looking ahead, Jensen emphasized the organization’s preparedness for potential flooding in Adamawa, noting that efforts are already underway to work with local authorities to relocate at-risk populations.
