Tensions are rising in Edo State as the All Progressives Congress (APC) has threatened to withdraw from the scheduled peace accord signing ceremony. The announcement came during a press conference held on Thursday morning by the State APC chairman, Jarrett Tenebe.
Concerns Over Police Inaction
Tenebe expressed the party’s dissatisfaction with the police’s failure to arrest members of the opposition party linked to recent violent incidents. He stated, “It has become imperative for our party, the All Progressives Congress, to tell Nigerians why we are not predisposed to be a signatory to the Peace Accord.” This statement underscores the APC’s growing frustration with the current security situation in the state.
He referenced a specific incident that has heightened tensions: “Two months ago, the then Edo State Commissioner of Police, CP Funsho Adegboye, told Nigerians that the command had the names of those who murdered Inspector Onuh Akor at the Benin airport.” Inspector Akor was shot during an attack by members of the Edo State Security Network while APC supporters awaited the arrival of Deputy Governor Philip Shaibu and the APC governorship candidate, Senator Monday Okpebholo, returning from Abuja.
Call for Accountability
Highlighting the ongoing lack of action, Tenebe lamented, “It is saddening to note that for more than two months since this ugly incident took place, the police are still unable to arrest and prosecute those that have been identified to be involved in the callout and unprovoked attack.” He further criticized Governor Godwin Obaseki, claiming that he has protected those responsible for the violence, describing them as “callous and notable hoodlums” housed within Government House.
