Peter Obi Demands Transparency on Fuel Subsidy Funds from Tinubu Government....KINDLY READ THE FULL STORY HERE▶

Peter Obi, the former presidential candidate of the Labour Party, has called on the Nigerian government led by President Bola Tinubu to provide clarity regarding the funds generated from the removal of fuel subsidies. Obi emphasized the need for transparency, urging the government to disclose specific applications for these funds, allowing citizens to monitor their usage effectively.

In an interview with News Central TV, monitored by SaharaReporters on X, Obi raised questions about the government’s decision to eliminate the fuel subsidy without presenting a clear plan for allocating the resulting funds. He insisted that the government must outline how it intends to utilize the money, suggesting that these funds could be directed toward important initiatives such as constructing classrooms to enhance school enrollment or improving primary healthcare services to reduce infant mortality rates.

Obi stressed the importance of accountability, stating, “We need more transparency. When we talk about transparency in terms of figures, you show it… Tell us how you arrive at it, and we will believe it. When we talk about subsidy, I have continuously said, if you are removing subsidy, what are we replacing it with? Where are we applying that subsidy we removed to?”

He continued, “If you say to me, I have removed subsidy and I will use it to build this number of classrooms to bring out-of-school children into education. We can verify and track those schools. When we have issues in health, particularly concerning primary healthcare and infant mortality, removal of the subsidy should enable us to construct this number of healthcare facilities, so we can measure it. Don’t remove something without telling us what replaces it and where we are spending the money.”

Obi’s statements reflect the growing criticism faced by the Tinubu government regarding its management of the fuel subsidy removal. Many Nigerians are concerned about the economic implications and the potential impact on their livelihoods. While the government argues that removing the subsidy is essential for addressing the country’s economic issues, Obi’s call for transparency has resonated with those demanding accountability and clarity regarding fund allocation.

Additionally, SaharaReporters reported that oil marketers are increasingly worried about the rising price of Premium Motor Spirit (PMS) from the Dangote Petroleum Refinery. The landing cost of imported petrol has soared to approximately N1,120 per litre, up from N1,117 per litre in July. This increase has pressured dealers to seek alternative sources for petrol supplies, as pump prices have been fluctuating between N600 and N700 per litre in July, escalating to between N855 and N897 per litre last week.
