History Made at Obeledu Community’s New Yam Festival
History Made at Obeledu Community’s New Yam Festival....KINDLY READ THE FULL STORY HERE▶
Significant history was made in the Obeledu community, located in the Aniocha Local Government Area of Anambra State, when Kenneth Ifeakandu from Okofia village won N500,000.00 for harvesting the heaviest yam during the community’s New Yam Festival. The impressive yam weighed a remarkable 95 kg, marking a milestone in the festival’s 2024 edition, which concluded over the weekend.
The “Yam Competition” was a key highlight of the festival, aimed at reviving and promoting agricultural spirit among the youth to achieve food sufficiency in the region. Ifeakandu expressed his joy at winning the prize and stated that he plans to invest the money back into his farm for better yields in the coming year. “The prize money is a morale booster for me to invest more into agriculture. I will expand my scope and return here next year by the grace of God with super huge harvests to show my gratitude to God,” he shared with journalists.

Ken Echendu, the President General of Obeledu Progress Union, highlighted the importance of the agricultural show integrated into the New Yam Festival. He noted that many people have a misconception about Anaocha’s land being unfit for farming. “We are changing that erroneous narrative,” he emphasized. This initiative aligns with the agricultural revolution promoted by the state governor, Prof. Chukwuma Soludo, encouraging local youth to pursue farming.
Echendu appreciated the executive council members for their efforts in making the festival a success and called on the community to continue supporting their administration for future progress.
During the event, the traditional ruler of Obeledu, His Royal Highness Igwe AC Oragwam (Ezeoranyelu III), performed the traditional yam cutting ceremony and thanked God for the community’s bountiful harvest. He encouraged residents to maintain peace, which he believes is essential for growth and development. The traditional ruler also reminisced about how the yam competition began in Obeledu and has gained international recognition.
Ikechukwu Okafor, Secretary of the Obeledu Media Department, attributed the festival’s success to the strong sense of community among the people. He mentioned that happiness among the residents is reflected in their prosperous farms. “The 2024 edition of the Obeledu New Yam Festival is particularly unique because of the level of participation of the people,” Okafor stated. To sustain this momentum, fertilizers were distributed to farmers during the event, paving the way for bumper harvests in the future.
Okafor also commended the Obeledu monarch for providing yams and cash to underprivileged individuals in the eight villages that make up the community, reinforcing the spirit of unity and generosity.
Mr. Collins Nwabuwanne, Anambra State Commissioner for Local Government Affairs and Chieftaincy Matters, attended the festival and congratulated the community on its successful celebration. He emphasized the importance of new yam festivals across the state in promoting agricultural initiatives and stated that the Obeledu community’s efforts would receive government support to enhance agricultural productivity.

Ambassadorial Nomination Under Fire: Frank Tie Tie Exposes ‘Mistake’ Regarding Ex-FUOYE VC Fasina!.
Human rights lawyer Frank Tietie has criticized the nomination and subsequent confirmation of Professor Abayomi Fasina, the former Vice-Chancellor of the Federal University, Oye-Ekiti, as a non-career ambassador designate.....KINDLY READ THE FULL STORY HERE▶
-
Prior to his confirmation, a coalition of civil society organizations protested at the National Assembly on July 7, 2026, opposing Fasina’s nomination due to pending court cases involving allegations of sexual harassment, human rights violations, and victimization.
-
Despite these protests, the Nigerian Senate officially confirmed Fasina’s appointment as a non-career ambassador on Thursday.
Frank Tietie’s Position
-
During an interview on ARISE Television, Tietie argued that nominating an individual with such “baggage” was a mistake, emphasizing that ambassadors represent Nigeria in the same capacity as the President.
-
Tietie stated that the government should have sent the “right signals” by avoiding such controversial appointments, especially given the current state of governance.
-
He argued that even in the absence of a final court judgment, the allegations themselves have “tainted” Fasina’s reputation, and the Senate should have delayed the confirmation until the legal matters were resolved.
-
Tietie also suggested that the National Assembly’s decision overlooks significant social changes regarding how such allegations are now viewed by society.
