Sokoto State Gears Up for Free and Fair Local Government Elections, Says Governor Ahmed Aliyu....KINDLY READ THE FULL STORY HERE▶

As the much-anticipated Sokoto State Local Government elections approach, Governor Ahmed Aliyu has assured the public of his administration’s commitment to ensuring a free, fair, and credible electoral process across all 23 local government areas. The elections, scheduled for September 21, 2024, promise to be a pivotal moment for the state, as the governor seeks to maintain transparency and fairness.

Urging PDP to Reconsider Boycott

Governor Aliyu has called on the People’s Democratic Party (PDP) to reconsider its decision to boycott the upcoming elections. Speaking at a campaign rally on Sunday in Goronyo, which attracted a large gathering of All Progressives Congress (APC) supporters from eight local governments in the Sokoto East Senatorial Zone, Aliyu expressed confusion over the PDP’s reluctance to participate.

He pointed out that the Sokoto Independent Electoral Commission (SIEC), responsible for organizing the elections, remains under the leadership appointed by the previous PDP administration. “I wonder why the PDP is afraid of participating in elections organized by SIEC,” the governor questioned, reassuring both the public and opposition parties of the commission’s neutrality and commitment to transparency.

Ensuring Credibility in the Elections

Governor Aliyu emphasized that his administration has not altered the leadership of SIEC, underscoring the commission’s independence. Following discussions with the SIEC Chairman, Aliyu affirmed his confidence in the electoral process, stating, “Whoever wins will be declared the winner.” He called on the people of Sokoto to participate in large numbers, stressing the importance of continuity in people-oriented projects.

Achievements of the Current Administration

In his speech, Aliyu highlighted his administration’s achievements across various sectors. He noted the significant strides made in agriculture, with farmers benefiting from free fertiliser, pesticides, and other inputs aimed at boosting production. Additionally, he praised infrastructure improvements, including solar-powered streetlights and newly constructed roads. He also assured that government employees have been receiving their salaries promptly, a departure from the practices of previous administrations.

Support from Political Leaders

Senator Aliyu Wamakko, the APC leader in Sokoto State, lauded the governor’s performance over the past year. Describing politics as a service to the people, Wamakko commended Governor Aliyu for his transformative leadership and urged continued support for the administration. “Mr Governor, we are very proud of you. You have made significant progress in all sectors of development,” he said.

Focus on Security

Deputy Governor Idris Gobir reassured the people of Sokoto East that the government is working tirelessly to address the issue of banditry in the region. He revealed that the state is implementing new measures to enhance safety and security, calling for support from citizens to combat insecurity effectively.

Continued Development and Support

During the rally, the Minister of Water and Sanitation, Bello Muhammad Goronyo, praised Governor Aliyu for delivering the dividends of democracy to all corners of the state. He reiterated the people’s support for the administration, highlighting their commitment to its ongoing development efforts.

The event concluded with the presentation of APC flags to the party’s candidates for the upcoming local government elections, a symbolic gesture that marked the official kick-off of the campaign. The flags were handed over by Senator Aliyu Magatakarda Wamakko, further galvanizing support for the APC candidates in the state.

Looking Ahead to the Elections

As Sokoto State prepares for its local government elections, the focus remains on ensuring that the process is transparent, inclusive, and credible. Governor Ahmed Aliyu’s administration has pledged to uphold democratic principles, while urging all political parties to engage fully in the electoral process for the betterment of the state.
