PDP’s Ogun Funmilayo Condemns Ekiti Government’s Deceptive Free Education Policy....KINDLY READ THE FULL STORY HERE▶

The immediate past State Secretary of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in Ekiti State, Funmilayo Ogun, widely known as OFT, has publicly criticized the state government for allegedly misrepresenting its free education system.

In a statement released in Ado Ekiti on Sunday through her Special Adviser on Media, Oladimeji Atenibiaje, Ogun expressed her concerns regarding the current state of education in Ekiti. She argued that Governor Biodun Oyebanji’s announcement of a free education initiative is misleading. “What Governor Biodun Oyebanji proclaimed as free education when he assumed office was a deceptive one,” she stated, questioning, “Where is the free education they are talking about?”

Ogun particularly focused on the recent increase in boarding fees for secondary schools, set to take effect in the 2024/2025 academic year. She emphasized that any hike in educational costs amid Nigeria’s ongoing economic struggles reflects a lack of empathy from the government. “This is rather insensitive. Some federal universities in Nigeria are not even charging above N100,000. How can a mere secondary school demand such a hefty amount?” she queried.

According to a circular from the Ekiti State Ministry of Education, boarding fees have risen to N90,000, along with a facility fee of N10,000, bringing the total cost for secondary school students to N100,000. Ogun condemned this increase as a clear violation of the promised free education policy, branding it a “fluke and a deception that holds no water.”

Ogun urged Governor Oyebanji to provide transparency and honesty regarding the implementation of the free education policy. “As a government, you can’t afford to be deceiving the people. People are paying, and the government is flaunting free education all over the place. This is unacceptable,” she asserted.

Looking ahead to the 2026 governorship election, the former PDP Secretary revealed that efforts are underway to reconcile and mobilize support within the party. She announced the formation of a caretaker committee to oversee party affairs until democratic structures are established. “The major agendas should be reconciliation and mobilization to strengthen our party and make it acceptable to the electorate,” Ogun stated, expressing confidence in the party’s strategies moving forward.
