Unacceptable Road Traffic Fatalities: Government Launches New Safety App....KINDLY READ THE FULL STORY HERE▶

The alarming statistics surrounding road traffic crashes in Nigeria are becoming increasingly concerning. According to Senator George Akume, the Secretary to the Government of the Federation (SGF), it is unacceptable that 2,776 people were killed and 16,309 injured in road traffic incidents between January and July of this year. These figures highlight a critical need for effective measures to enhance road safety across the nation.

Past Statistics Raise Concerns

Reflecting on last year’s data, Akume noted that 5,081 individuals lost their lives in road mishaps, with 31,874 injuries reported throughout 2023. These statistics underscore the urgent need for intervention to prevent such tragedies from recurring.

Launch of the FRSC Mobile App

In a bid to address these issues, Akume spoke during the launch of the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) Mobile App and the National Crash Reporting Information System (NACRIS) in Abuja. The primary aim of the app is to raise awareness and sensitize both drivers and passengers about the potential causes of road traffic accidents.

Akume expressed optimism that the app would significantly enhance emergency reporting, identify black spots on roads, issue eyewitness reports, detect speeding, and alert both drivers and passengers to dangerous situations. Additionally, the app allows motorists to check the validity of their licenses and vehicle documents, among other beneficial features.

Technological Advancement in Road Safety

Corps Marshal of the FRSC, Shehu Mohammed, emphasized the importance of technology in improving road safety measures. He stated, “The FRSC Mobile App is a software application that can be used on our phones to alert us on sensitive road safety issues through programmed features such as excessive speeding and dangerous driving.” He believes that the proper utilization of these features will drastically reduce injuries and fatalities resulting from road traffic crashes.

In light of technological advancements, Mohammed noted that the FRSC must adapt and evolve its operations to align with global standards. He also highlighted that the NACRIS aims to promote a multi-sectoral approach to crash reporting and data storage. Phase two of the NACRIS project will focus on developing a digitalized crash data template based on feedback from the initial phase.

Commitment to Enhancing Road Safety

Abiodun Adeshida, Chairman of the House of Representatives Committee on FRSC, shared his belief that the new app, along with ongoing efforts to amend the 2007 FRSC Act, positions the organization toward 21st-century technological standards. He expressed confidence that these advancements will contribute to enhanced road safety measures.

In a post shared on his official X account on Monday, Shehu reacted to reports suggesting that only a small fraction of the Nigerian Army’s 2025 budget for security equipment has been released.

He stated that although over ₦20 billion was approved for the procurement of security equipment, only about ₦1.7 billion—roughly 7 percent—has reportedly been disbursed so far.

Shehu questioned the possible impact of the funding gap on troop safety, suggesting it could be linked to growing battlefield casualties.

He also raised concerns about reported cases of soldiers abandoning their posts, implying that insufficient equipment and support may be contributing factors.

The commentator further asked what had become of funds borrowed in the name of addressing insecurity, calling for accountability in their use.
