The recent shooting of a 24-year-old man identified as Ebuka has reignited concerns over police brutality in Nigeria. This tragic incident occurred along the Onitsha/Owerri Road in Anambra State, where Ebuka was shot by a group of police officers while traveling on the highway.
According to Harrison Gwamnishu, a social media user who claims to have witnessed the event, Ebuka was shot on Wednesday. Eyewitness reports indicate that he was rushed to the hospital for treatment but was sadly pronounced dead due to the severity of his gunshot wounds. Gwamnishu took to X (formerly Twitter) to share updates, including pictures and videos of the incident, expressing his outrage over the situation. He urged the Inspector General of Police and local authorities to take immediate action against the officers involved, stating:
“24-year-old Ebuka was allegedly shot and killed today by some police officers along Onitsha/Owerri road. The officers involved are currently in hiding. Ebuka was rushed to the hospital and confirmed dead. His body has been deposited at the mortuary.”
The spokesperson for the Nigeria Police Force, Muyiwa Adejobi, expressed his sorrow regarding the incident. He confirmed that the Force Headquarters has ordered investigations into the shooting, emphasizing that the police would not condone such acts of violence. Adejobi stated:
“This is sad. The Force Headquarters has ordered the CPs Anambra and Imo to fish out the men and carry out a thorough investigation into the matter. May his soul rest in peace, while justice must be done.”
In a statement, the Anambra State Police Command confirmed that the police commissioner had ordered the detention of the patrol team members involved in the shooting. The case has since been transferred to the State Criminal Investigation Department (SCID) for a comprehensive investigation.
This tragic incident underscores the persistent problem of police brutality in Nigeria. Recently, students at the Ebonyi State University raised alarms about alleged police extortion, harassment, and intimidation in Abakaliki and its surrounding areas. Many students expressed their distress over the actions of law enforcement, which they believe undermine their safety and constitutional rights.
Comrade Oshim Tobias Nkwegu, the President of the Students’ Union Government at Ebonyi State University, wrote a letter to the Commissioner of Police, Augustine Ogbodo, outlining their concerns. The situation has been described by students as “worrisome” and “unbecoming,” highlighting a significant deviation from the police’s duty to protect citizens.
