Gunmen launched a violent assault on the Isiala-Mbano Local Government Area headquarters in Imo State, resulting in the deaths of two local vigilante members guarding the premises. The attack occurred on Tuesday night, leading to widespread fear among residents as the assailants also set several vehicles parked at the council headquarters on fire.

Witnesses reported that the gunmen arrived at the secretariat around 8:30 p.m., opening fire indiscriminately. “Two security personnel at the Isiala-Mbano council headquarters were killed. The attackers also torched a significant portion of the building and several vehicles. Many others sustained injuries and fled the scene,” stated one witness.

The violent incident has raised concerns in Umuelemai, the local government headquarters, prompting residents to seek refuge in nearby villages to escape the escalating danger. The violence did not end there, as gunmen also targeted the Obowo Divisional Police Headquarters during the same night, killing a police officer.

According to reports, the attackers first struck at NEPA Junction in Umulogho community, specifically targeting a police officer at his residence. After identifying their victim, the gunmen killed him and set his belongings ablaze before fleeing the scene. In the early hours of Wednesday, the assailants returned to the Obowo Divisional Police Headquarters in Otoko community and set it ablaze.

A local source revealed that the attack on Tuesday night featured heavy gunfire that lasted about 30 minutes, coinciding with the assault on the Isiala-Mbano council headquarters. The source confirmed that a police officer was pulled from his home and killed at NEPA Junction, while a male student from the College of Nursing Sciences in Umulogho was injured by a stray bullet. Many victims from these incidents remain unidentified.

The first attack occurred between 8 p.m. and 9 p.m., with the gunmen specifically targeting the police officer living in the area. Following the assault, police and military personnel arrived to recover the officer’s body. Around 3 a.m. on Wednesday, the gunmen returned to the Otoko Police Divisional Headquarters, firing for approximately 30 minutes. The full extent of casualties from this second attack is still unknown, as fear has deterred individuals from approaching the charred facility.
