3,590 Inmates on Death Row in Nigeria as Correctional Service Tackles Overcrowding

No fewer than 3,590 inmates in Nigeria are currently on death row, according to the Nigeria Correctional Service (NCoS). This was revealed by NCoS Public Relations Officer, Assistant Controller of Corrections Abubakar Umar, during a conversation with the News Agency of Nigeria on Wednesday in Abuja.....KINDLY READ THE FULL STORY HERE▶

Umar disclosed that as of September 3, 2024, the total number of inmates across custodial centers in Nigeria stands at 84,741, comprising 82,821 males and 1,920 females. Among them, a significant number—57,750 inmates—are awaiting trial, including 56,303 males and 1,447 females.

The NCoS spokesman provided a breakdown of the inmate population, revealing that 21,900 have been convicted, with 21,519 being male and 381 female. Additionally, there are 1,501 lifers in custody, consisting of 1,478 males and 23 females. The total number of inmates on death row includes 3,517 males and 73 females, making up the 3,590 total.

Umar highlighted the challenge posed by the high number of awaiting trial inmates, which significantly strains the correctional facilities. However, he assured that the Service is actively working on solutions to expedite judicial processing and reduce the backlog.

“Thanks to the initiative and backing of the Minister of Interior, Dr. Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo, we successfully reduced the inmate population by releasing 4,063 individuals who were given the option to pay fines and/or compensation,” Umar explained.

To further address custodial congestion, the NCoS is focusing on several strategies, including the construction of new facilities, expanding community sentencing, improving court logistics, and implementing various decongestion measures. These efforts are complemented by the release of eligible inmates.

Umar also noted the positive impact of the Service’s partnerships with other agencies, which have led to enhanced security within custodial facilities and improved conditions for inmates. “The Service has taken steps to reinforce the security of custodial facilities against external threats, and we have maintained a stable and secure environment within our facilities, with no incidents of internal insurrection,” he said.

In addition to security improvements, significant strides have been made in inmate treatment and care, particularly in reformation and rehabilitation programs. The partnership between the NCoS and the National Open University of Nigeria (NOUN) has resulted in the enrollment of a substantial number of inmates in various academic programs.

As of August 31, 2024, 1,282 inmates are enrolled in NOUN’s special study center, with 1,215 studying for Bachelor of Science degrees, 62 pursuing Postgraduate Diplomas and Master’s degrees, and five working towards Doctor of Philosophy degrees, with three currently writing their thesis.

  • Zoning Policy: LP National Publicity Secretary, Asogwa, maintained that the decision to zone the presidency to the South was not a recent or secret development.

  • Binding Resolutions: These convention resolutions are binding on all stakeholders, meaning no aspirants are exempt from the established zoning framework.

  • Aspirant Risk: Asogwa argued that Agada undertook a personal political risk by purchasing forms and campaigning while the zoning arrangement was already public knowledge.

  • Dismissal of Claims: The party dismissed Agada’s additional claims of spending over ₦300 million as irrelevant to the constitutional enforcement of party rules.

  • Institutional Integrity: The LP asserted that the disqualification was a necessary measure to maintain internal cohesion and balance, rather than an act of vindictiveness against a specific individual.
