In a shocking incident, gunmen have attacked the Oba Police Divisional Headquarters located in Idemili South Local Government Area of Anambra State. The attack occurred in the early hours of Tuesday, September 3, 2024, as a large group of assailants stormed the police facility, throwing explosives and causing significant damage.
Reports indicate that the attackers also targeted the nearby Oba Civic Centre during their assault. Eyewitness accounts reveal that a police corporal was killed in the attack, while several others sustained injuries of varying severity.
The motive behind the assault remains unclear; however, local sources suggest that the attackers may be affiliated with a secessionist group. The state Police Public Relations Officer, SP Tochukwu Ikenga, confirmed the incident in an official statement.
Ikenga detailed the chaotic scene, stating, “The suspected armed secessionists began shooting sporadically in an attempt to gain entrance to the police station and threw petrol bombs, which ignited fires in some offices, including the Oba Civic Centre.” He further noted that a police corporal tragically lost his life during the incident.
In response to the attack, a joint security operation involving the Army, Navy, Civil Defence, and other security agencies has been initiated in Oba and its surrounding areas. Ikenga emphasized the swift action taken by police officers on duty and the responding joint security team to extinguish the fires caused by the explosives.
Condemning the violence, the Commissioner of Police in Anambra State, CP Nnaghe Obono Itam, described the invasion of security facilities and attacks on law enforcement as an assault on the nation itself. He pledged to bring those responsible for this heinous act to justice, asserting that such aggression would not go unpunished.

She stated that after Nancy confessed to the theft, she left the pastor’s house to verify the location of the missing money, only to encounter the pastor rushing her daughter to the hospital upon her return. The Pastor’s Account: Pastor Samson, 45, alleges that the mother specifically requested that he discipline the girl for her repeated theft and habit of sleeping away from home. He admitted to using a horsewhip on the minor, claiming he stopped after 13 to 15 strokes when she became noticeably weak. He insisted he had no intention of killing the girl, whom he described as being like a daughter to him.
The Cross River State Police Command spokesperson, ASP Eitokpah Sunday, has confirmed both arrests and stated that an investigation is currently underway. Three suspects, identified as Chinedu David (29), Ezeagwu Chukwuma (38), and Ifeanyi Ogbeanyi (45), were arrested during the operation. Lagos State Commissioner of Police Fatai Tijani announced that the suspects were apprehended Saturday night while transporting the contraband in an unregistered MAN diesel truck.
The truck and the items, which included dozens of sacks of military uniforms and cartons of substances believed to be illicit drugs, were taken into custody. A police source confirmed that the truck’s driver and assistant were the first suspects detained, followed by two additional suspects who later came to a Surulere police station claiming ownership of the seized items.
